Spam filter in YAM ?
« on: August 02, 2003, 10:19:37 AM »
Hi all,

I tried to do a filter in YAM to remove all spam emails. I tried to find the word HTML in the body of the emails but it didn't work.

Any hint ???

Thanks.

You can't.

Version 2.4 of YAM has been modified by some well-meaning programmer to change the behaviour of the filters. In version 2.3, the filters could be applied to remote emails (on the server) AND to emails already received and in the "Incoming" folder. In version 2.4, if the "Remote Filter" attribute is set, the filter no longer works on already-received emails.

What this means is that a filter that checks for "html" in the body of the email won't work remotely (because only the header is accessible), and won't work locally if the Remote bit is set.

You may be able to do it by having TWO identical filters, one with the Remote bit set, that operates on email headers at the server and one without Remote set, that operates on already-received emails.

I use a combination of several filters which works on probably 98% of all the spam I get. Just one filter isn't enough, but I think the one that catches the most is the one that says "if my address isn't in the To: field, and if this mail didn't come from someone I know, then it's spam."

Other things that work are looking for your e-mail address or parts of it in the Subject: field and the From: field, looking for several HTML tags in the Message Body (not all html spam has "HTML" in it), looking for words like viagra, mortgage, or any other overly common words that you don't see in legitimate mails you receive, or looking for word pairs like "loan" and "interest" or "free" and "brochure".

Good luck
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.

...Or get intimate with the delete key, like I do :)

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.

it should be noted that I 'only' receive 2-5 spam mails a day, probably because there's a spam filter at the server. If I got the number of spam mails some of you report, my delete key might have stopped working.

Lucky you, at the minute I'm receiving between 80 and 90 SPAM emails per day :-o

Of those ones, I'd say that 80% of them are advertising Viagra, the rest are just pornographic.

Anyone else on Demon Internet here? I don't think they've got any SPAM filters on their servers. They're defintely getting worse and worse...
