Amiga 1000
« on: February 26, 2008, 10:13:33 PM »
Hello
I recently found an Amiga 1000 for $25
It comes with software and is a complete system.  I have not gotten it yet.  I think I would like a nicer system.  I want to be able to run OS 3.9.  Which one should I get?  Is this system worth anything? It would be nice to get one for the same price that I can sell my current one.  I want a system that can have all the nice upgrades like USB and stuff like that. I know next to nothing about amigas.

Thanks
kevin

The 1000 is a collector-only system.  Great to look at; Not ideal for those who want to play the old games.  The 1000 goes for between 25-150 USD depending on condition.  A clean one with no yellowing and a working internal floppy complete with keyboard and correct mouse and good condition box fetches the most in an online auction.

Some acessories, like internal expansions or hard drives are really getting rare and could fetch more than the rest of the system.

I'd forget 3.9, it's just too dated. To even think of getting OS3.9 you would have to get hold of a Phoenix Motherboard which are rare to say the least.

I would purchase it at that price if its in good condition just for a collectable or then turn around and sell it for more and ebay and use that money towards a 1200.

It's a good system for a simple real-time system or if you want to write your own kickstarts/OSes.  Even the ROMs are easily upgradeable since it uses 27C256/27C512.  I have many old games that only run on the Amiga 1000.  It's floppy controller is also more flexible (tolerant) than the A4000/A1200 if you'll be using floppy-based games.  If your floppy drive turns out to be bad, you can easily hook up a laptop and run the simulator here:

A1000 also has a built-in TV modulator and video/audio outputs in color which you won't find on most other amigas so if you are not getting a monitor with it, it would be easy to hook up to a composite monitor or TV.

The A1000 is a nice Amiga, but it's hardly realistic upgrading it in such a way running OS3.9 would be possible.

If you are planning on running OS3.9, you should choose an Amiga with better upgradeoptions. One of them is the A1200: can be found rather easy and not to expensive (although price seems to be rising), has the latest AGA-chipset and expansions like extra ram or turboboards can be found all over the place. The other one I would recommend is the A2000. Older than the A1200 and does not support AGA-software, but very easy to expand and can also be found very frequently for a reasonable price.

All other Amigas are either rare and therefor expensive (A3000D/T & A4000D/T) or much harder to expand (A500 & A600) and are therefor not a very good start for someone just wanting to start fooling around with OS3.9.

Nevertheless, the A1000 is a very cool machine, especially if you have some extra fastram with it (which is becoming quite hard to find, I must say). I don't have one and am also not planning on buying one, but wouldn't turn one down if it was offered to me for free...
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

If you know next to nothing about Amigas I suggest you first browse teh mighty Interweb for information about hardware and software. Wikipedia can help you a lot.

Then you can start answering your own questions:
- Do I want an all-in-one machine (like the A1200), a desktop model (like the A4000), or a tower model?
- What upgrades do I want?
- What do I want to do with it (pretty much important this one)?
- What do I want to spend (even more important)?

If you want things like USB, network cards and a fast processor with some memory(pretty much needed if you want to do Internet stuff), then don't be surprised if you end up spending any amount between 500 and 1000 dollars, especially if you buy all parts separately.

That Amiga 1000 is nice, and at $25 not expensive, but you're pretty much limited to some games and old apps. Expanding the A1000 to something more useful is a monetary nightmare.

Advice: buy either an A1200 (all-in-one wedge model) or an A4000 (desktop model). They're your best shot when it comes to upgrading it to USB, CD-ROM, Internet etc. But be prepared to pay a lot of money.

Hi

With only so many Amiga 1000s left in the world you should take very good care of it. If you do nothing else just open the case and gaze over all those names scribed into the inside face of the casing. Magic piece of history, given that the Amiga still represents the greatest computer ever made.... And this was the first.

OS3.9 needs RAM and Graphics, really, to get the best out of it.. And a CD ROM drive. I don`t bother, I just enjoy staying in the slow lane. There is far more kit and software and games for a classic Amiga. Like say the trusty A1200.

Check out my website if you wanna see what I'm talking about.

I have an Amiga 1000 coming in next week. I still have no clue what I am going to do with it. I am hoping to come up with a way to get it to boot to 2.04 at least. That is the first really good workbench, and it should run OK as long as I can figure out how to make a kickstart disk...
