About A600 and PC-diskdrive
« on: February 22, 2008, 04:44:12 PM »
Ive got a A600 with a missing intern diskdrive. I tried to plug in a classic PC-diskdrive, and well... not think it work, but the diskicon appear in workbench, it also try to read at boot. Nothing happend then I try a amiga-disk in it.. Any possibles to make it run, if I write a Amiga-image to a PCdisk in the pc?

I also got a amiga-extern diskdrive, it seems not to be workin at all, looked around in workbench ( the OS is on the harddrive ).

BTW, I found the a600 in the dumpster..
I also got a fully functional A500, but I will not take parts from that computer..

As I understand it, a PC floppy drive will not work, unmodified in an Amiga, as there is some extra circuitry on an Amiga drive to allow it to do some clever things.

As for the icon appearing on workbench, that is interesting. I have never booted to WB without a floppy drive being physically attached, whether it has a disk in or not, so I don't know if the floppy icon is there whether a floppy drive is present or not.

Dont bother with a floppy drive.

Buy a 44-pin IDE to CF adapter and a CF card to use as a hard drive. You'd pick them both up very cheaply.

You can use your PC and WinUAE to install Workbench, WHDload, games etc. onto the CF card before putting into the A600.

If you dont want to cut your A600 case (so you can easily get the CF card in and out) consider ALSO getting a PCMCIA to CF adapter and a second smaller CF card for transferring data to and from the PC. You'll need the driver CFD and FAT95 program installed, both are free on Aminet.

If you REALLY want a disk drive, you can modify a Panasonic U257

Actually, instead of cutting the case, can't the CF adapter just be mounted where the floppy drive used to be?  Then you could insert/remove the CF card through that existing slot...

 Or use this hack instead:link.

This way you don't ruin the Amiga floppy cable. And yes, this hack behaves like an original Amiga floppy in any circumstances.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

You could "ruin" a peecee floppy cable, there are tons of thoose  :-D
With the cable hack you can change the drive any time you want, instead of having to modify another drive.

Huh, so it´s so easy to make the pcfloppy work on amiga600, cool..
I got tons of pcfloppy-drives, and even more cables.

I got a nice A500, that I gonna leave in orginalshape..
but the pretty poor lookin a600 gonna go for my modding, to learn, and improve the computer.

*Oh*..., I would of pointed you to Ian Stedmans scanned mag article about converting PC floppy drives, but it seems to of been taken offline.

http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Downloads/downloads.html

Doh. I figured this might happen some time.

Good job I spent 1/2 a day saving all the useful stuff, including pretty much the whole download page from his site ;-)

Let me know if anyone needs anything from there ;-)

Hodgkinson.

Well, I looked at the threat about convert a pcdrive, dunno how much I belive it work, I hope, and I think it´s a pretty good chance too... worth to test...
I also intrested in other homemade-adapter/hack-stuff like power up my a600 with a PSU from a PC, and make a pc-mouse work on my amiga too.. on the cheapest possible way.
