scan doubler replacement?
« on: July 29, 2003, 01:21:38 PM »
Hi there

I wondered. I saw this product on lik-sang.com and thought that it may provide an effective replacement for a scan doubler/flicker fixer:

Is this correct? Could i get an amiga to s-video/component lead and use my a600  on my svga monitor? I have a vga box for my dreamcast, and it gives an excellent picture (thought it was only £8 whereas this multi purpose one i linked to is nearer £40!)

The picture will be about on par with the tv modulator. (ie it's crap)

The SVGA monitor goes to waste. :-)

A real scandoubler is quite expensive, but the only choice if you want a good picture. :-(

The Hardwarebook has all the pinouts you need to create a cable between the Amiga and the monitor.

While you can make or buy a cable to go from the Amiga to the monitor, the problem is that most of the Amiga's screenmodes have too low a frequency to be displayed on monitors (unless you have a multiscan monitor like me :-) ).  A scandoubler is needed to double the frequency to make it usable on modern monitors, and even then interlaced will be terrible without a flicker fixer :-(

but a multiscan can't sync to 15 Khz of PAL/NTSC!.

The problems are:

-for that gear, you need a CVBS or a YC signal genetated from your A600. . . and you haven't.

-you need a video encoder RGB>Y/C

or, you must buy an Amiga external Scandoubler-FlickerFixer.

Ciao

I thought doing 15KHz was the point of a multi sync, also aren't Atari's the same when it comes to monitors anyhow???

The lower two screen modes (the ones with colour) are 15KHz, the high res screenmode (640x400?) the Black and White one is 31KHz.

Well, that's for the native screen modes ala ST. Not sure about the ones with GFX cards like the Falcons etc can use.

There is actually a very good monitor convertor, its the XRGB-2.  Its also much more expensive than the cheap ones, but it converts using the seperate RGB channels, creating a very sharp picture.

About the XRGB-2. Of course, you need to connect the Miggy using a RGB lead, and a Japanese one at that... that may be a problem since it has different pinouts than Euroscart.

Hmm, that's nice.. Although an Amiga scandoubler actually costs less.. You can do more with the X-RGB2 though.

Pinout for the Japanese scart .. I wonder why they had to do that differently to us Euros.. I thought the Japanese liked standards.

got my a1200 connected to a
 svga via a simple scandoubler.
the picture is much crisper than my 1084.

i will trade it though (the scandoubler) for a 1230 (better with some ram) or better 1240!

note:the little card isnt good for multiscan monitors! it works great on any vga/svga (as long as you dont like working interlaced screen modes (they flicker as there is No flickerfixer (although there is an option for one (empty socket))
