With complete pc systems costing less than $300 I doubt the cheap home computer niche that the 1200 originally filled is still viable.

That said, I'd still love to see a new 1200 style amiga. Maybe with a slidein battery and lcd attachment that turns it into a nice portable unit in one step.

I definitely agree on this one -- the integrated one- piece platforms of the past just aren't practical in today's market and the design overhead and maintenance requirements would likely be significant.

Eyetech has indicated that their reduced form factor boards will appeal to both the embedded and consumer markets - a shrewd decision.

Quite a few companies are jumping on the home appliance bandwagon. Take a look at the XPC and MegaPC for some interesting design ideas.

P.S. "Gosh, you've... really got some nice toys here."

There seem to be a lot of haters of the a600 style box, but after having owned them all, I actually LOVED the a600 case and only just recently sold it.  It was not flimsy and the idea to just pick it up, pop it in your bag and roll anywhere with it was great.

It sucked becuse it was a low spec machine, but I guarentee that if it had voodoo, 060, and standard monitor output, it might have sold off the shelves.

With that said I would like to see the following:

A3000 style - Number one choice
A1200 - cheaper than a laptop since it won't have a screen that I don't currently need, is portable so I can take it to work and wherever a vga or dvi plug is.  For the low price I can have multiple and reuse existing monitors and lcds, I'm positive someone would come up with an optional attachable screen for portability later.

Finally the A600 case.  You haters just need to feel this puppy.  It's actually really a cool size and design.  Crappy internals, but just go with USB and firewire for ports, and DVI,ADC, or VGA for video.   No need for stupid parallel, serial, and floppy ports.

Hi.
An A1200 style case with usb on the back would be really cool, but as a few have pointed out it's not very practical. I think a small box design with wireless kbd and mouse would be better. Maybe something like the CDTV, only smaller and more functional?

An A1200 style case with a few tweaks would probably sell quite well (in Amiga terms), though, and if anyone made it they probably wouldn't regret it.

Some cool mini-itx stuff:

Absolutely. I love my A600s (I've scrounged three to add to my original one). Stick a CDRW in the side, lots of USB ports on the side or back and catches on the corners for an optional TFT screen.  Biggest hazard is sourcing a decent mouse/touchpad solution at reasonable cost.

I use my laptop far more than any of the other computers at home simply because I can use it from a comfy chair in the lounge and don't have to be banished into the dining room. I wish it ran a bit cooler though - it almost singes my legs at times!

If we mean a computer that has everything on the motherboard rather than cards, is fairly small, then I think such a machine could be a good idea. Whilst having the expandibility and flexibility of cards is good, it does tend to make computers rather large. There seems to be a huge gulf between tiny laptops and huge towers. Arguably the reason is because you don't need anything in between - you either want something on the move, or if it's in your house you don't care how much space it takes up. I probably wouldn't want one myself, but things that might appeal to a more mainstream set of people are worth considering (in a similar vein, I think the iMac is an awful style of computer, but it was clearly a good move for Apple).

I'd rather avoid the exact style of the A1200. One example of small computers I liked the look of was the older Macs: you still had detachable keyboard (and monitor), but the main computer was still a fairly small pizza-style box. The main worry I always have with keyboards built in is spilling drink over an expensive computer;) With laptops you have to accept that risk, but with a desktop, you at least have a little more space. On a similar note, I dislike the way that Commodore tried to trim down space - eg, 2.5" IDE drives when 3.5" ones were so much cheaper, or chopping the numeric keypad off the A600. If you want to make a laptop-size computer *then damn well make a proper one*. Otherwise, enjoy the flexibility of making a small computer, but one with enough room to use the cheaper components, and not have to cut too much out.

If we mean also a low end machine, then perhaps, but I'd hate to see a repeat of the mistakes of the past of concentrating too much on low end machines. Also the climate is different now - PCs that are still very powerful can be had very cheaply, and there's plenty of competition from consoles.

I think the 'keyboard all-in-1' methahore is severely dated. Even Apple would never do it, their monitor and console in 1 is already bordering on the riducule.

But I'd love a stylish, fanless, highly integrated unit, with 1 AGP and (at least) 1 PCI slot and enough room to add RAM. And CHEAP, because the current A1s are far too expensive. Also, no legacy interface nonsense (like serial, parallel port). It should look a bit like the Shuttles, but using a special case designed for Amiga.  Even better if its an official supported Amiga computer.  Then,  it would have the Amiga logo and be sold with a keyboard with Amiga keys.

Actually I wouldn't mind something like this:

It should be wireless though, I hate trailing wires.

YES! I would get one immediately  :-D

The more the A1 appear to be a PC box, the more I would think about getting one  :-(

Put it in an A1000 style case...... :-x

I dunno about Transparent blue (a la iMac) bit cheesy - I do remember seeing a rendered mock-up of a Black 1200 with a DVD in the side - very striking !

I dont think it should look like a CDTV - thats nice but a bit old fashioned... It should be based on practicality rather than looks, damm i wish someone had thought of that before they made my pc, ie all wires on back so its hard to plug stuff in without ripping all my desk apart. Not sure about the boing logo stuff, i prefered the old a-tick logo, that should def be brought back... for both lookin cool and also a hint of retro styling on the modern amiga. Maybe add some interesting features to the a1 that nothing else has.. let me think.. maybe uh i dunno but if i think of something i will def post it here. Just make sure it has ethernet built in makes networking so much easier :-)

Cheers

A600 / 1200 cases are great - but if they are gonna be a bit more portable, an internal PSU would be preferable.

I like the idea of a slide on Battery - use a Loptap stylee in the place where accelerators sit in the Classic 1200 ?

would really have to trim power useage down, as an internal supply that would fit would not be beefy at all...
