« on: February 16, 2008, 10:09:00 PM »
my mate has a GVP A1230 Turbo+ Series II Amiga 1200 Accelerator Card and he is going to sell it to me for my 1200.

What type of memory does it take ?
Is the memory easy to find ?
Is the memory expensive ?

and anyother things i should know about it.

thanks

Those GVP accelerators do not take normal memory chips that most accelerators use.

they use GVP's own make of memory...a 64 pin simm which are increasingly rare to find and sell for a lot more than normal.

they come in 2 sizes....4mb or 16mb...even one 4mb simm will greatly increase the performance of your amiga.

that set aside, those GVP accelerators are a very good bit of kit and if the price is right i would suggest you buy it.

They are very good cards, i had one with just 4mb on and it was very capable...i still regret selling it to this day.

also if its the 40mhz EC version, they are easily upgradeable to the full 50mhz processor as the CPU is not soldered onboard and its just a case of swapping the cpu and crystal....very quick then.

They go on ebay for around 50-80 quid.....depends how much of a mate he is

Any more than that i would scrap the idea and go for a blizzard 1230 MKIV, they go for 90-100 but take the cheaper memory and lots of it, 128mb (256 with the scsi kit).

i think the gvp takes 32 mb maximum.

Agreed, those GVP cards are excellent, one of the best A1200 '030 cards along with the Blizzard. I'd say anything under $100 US would be a good deal.

the 40mhz version is usualy the EC,i would buy then source a 50mhz full 68030...one nippy card then.

either way the way accelerator card prices are going...it will be a sound investment...but buy it to enjoy it.  :-)

A friend of mine use to have a GVP 1260. Great card, except for the 64-pin SIMM prices. He had a 16Mb SIMM on it.

BTW: GVP made SIMMs in 1, 4 and 16Mb "flavours", all 60ns. That's why the performance was so great.

There is a hack on aminet to "make" a GVP SIMM by ordinary 72-pin units. Ugly as hell, but works!
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Dear Friend:

I have one gvp accelerator too (for my a1200) and is running great. It is an 030/50mhz+fpu 50mhz.
I use a 16 mb simm(a special 'gvp' memory stick)which I bought for us$ 70 new and in good condition from software hut.

They might still have some in stock. The gvp 030 accelerator allows you to have a maximum of two memory modules, so you could have up to 32mb in the configuration of 16+16 memory modules. Me, I have one 16mb simm and in the other slot a 4mb. I've been thinking about getting a second 16mb simm...but I'm holding my money to buy an 060 accelerator.
Cheers!!!
