ShapeShifter + ICab?
« on: February 14, 2008, 06:12:06 AM »
Just curious if anyone here is able to run ICab (or "wannabe" text browser) with ShapeShifter and OS 7.5.5.

I'm certain at least ICab worked years back on my Blizz 1260 card..

I've tried all the tooltypes, running with a 100% clean 3.1 test install, various config options, etc, all to no avail.

It seems to be an issue with ShapeShifter, as ICab fires right up with Basilisk II using the exact same Mac hardfile, Mac ROM, similar config, etc. With ShapeShifter, ICab and wannabe begin to load, then crash out with "type 2" and "type 3" errors, and on rare occasions locking the "Mac" entirely.

System is an A1200/Apollo 1260 and AGA. Older Netscape, which stinks, does work fine, as does everything else aside from ICab and wannabe. The emulated Mac is amazingly fast, actually.

(Obviously, I don't need to run ICab on my A1200, at this point I'm just itching to figure it out!)

You're post isn't exactly clear, but I take it Shapeshifter is working, and you are able to start MacOS? If that's the case, the problem is likely within MacOS. You may have more luck asking on a Mac forum.

Hmmm, I doubt it, since ICab and wannabe work fine under Basilisk II on the same machine, with the same hardfile, ROM, and general config.

I have it running. I had some trouble in the past too with some apps/games. Make sure you have CFM-68k Runtime Enabler 4.0 installed. Made some programs work for me!

WOOT!!!!

I somehow managed to *delete* that extension entirely (when I "upgraded" it to 4.0, LOL). I reinstalled it, and ICab works now.

Thanks man! I owe you a few of these :pint: :pint: :pint:

Extension? So was I right about the problem being within MacOS?

Kind of, but saying the problem is maybe somewhere "within macos" is like saying a random BSOD is somewhere "in your hardware". :P

The puzzling aspect for me was that these programs worked fine under a different emulator, which would normally lead one away from suspecting the *same* Mac hardfile/OS install. However, in this case ShapeShifter does in fact need this particular extension to run certain programs, whereas Basilisk II does not. A bit strange, but I'm glad it's resolved. (I thought the CFM-Runtime 4.0 base was already covered, but I had accidentally deleted the extension instead of replacing it with the newer version. Double-checking as per Flashlab's advice lead me to the problem.)

On an entirely general and pretty much worthless level, yes, you were right. ;-)
