Noob needs help to save games from PC to Amiga disks
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:44:34 PM »
Hi !

I just bought a sealed Amiga A600, and need some help. My Amiga has 1mb of memory, 20mb of hard drive and ROM 2.0x 37350, kickstart 2.05. I added 1 mb so now it does have 2 mb.

I downloaded several games from a site and and just don´t know how to get the games into a disk that Amiga will be able to read.

I saw some that I could do that using a pcmcia card, but do I need special software to do it ? How can I run the games from my pcmcia in my workbench ?

Do I need to upgrade my workbench ? how do I do ?

Sorry about the all of the questions, but I never had an Amiga before. I just used a long time ago, some of my friends had it, but I can´t remember anything.

Thanks so much !  :-)

Hi rafreire, Welcome to Amigas. I had an Amiga 600 for several years in the '90s. As the A600 has a PCMCIA slot you could buy a CF transfer kit:

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=440&osCsid=54c3876f85ca2ccba9f737a8f2a6aa43

You'll obviously need a reader for your PC too if don't already have one.

If you want to do something a little more advanced you could use the PCMCIA slot for a network card.

Another alternative are Amiga Explorer using the serial cable or TCP/IP:

If you upgrade to Workbench 2.1 you can use CrossDos to transfer files from MSDOS disks. There are other programs that work on older Kickstart/Workbench like MessySid but I'm not sure what's available these days.
Minimig ¦ A500 ¦ A600

If I recall, my old A600 had crossdoss included on the os2.x disks, though I might have had 2.1 instead of 2.0. If you find a cd0 file in the storage/dosdrivers (should be on the storage: disk in the OS install disks), you can drag that into devs:dosdrivers, reset and then read 720K PC floppies. (Or just double click the pc0 icon to use it until your next reset) The only prob with that is finding double density disks that will work. If you can't find them, simply put scotch tape over the hole on the upper left hand side of the floppy (not the write protect tab, but the one without the plastic slider). While not terribly reliable in the long run, it should hold data temporarily until you transfer it to/from your Amiga. Also, the os2.x version of crossdos doesn't support windows filenames, so you're limited to the old DOS 7.3 length filenames. There's a bunch of scripts and rather elaborate ways to correct this, but the easiest thing to do (in my opinion) is lha or zip the whole directory on window, and unpack it onto the Amiga's HD. (there should be an lha executable on aminet, along with unzip) Also, in case the last guy was right about not having crossdos on 2.0, and you go the null-cable route, Aexplorer is a nice and convienient way to transfer files between windows and Amiga, and does work over a null-modem. I've also used Twin to do the same, and it has some convenient batch features that can be handy if you're not too afraid of a shell/dos prompt. A regular terminal proggy (Hyperterm on windows, TERM on aminet) can also work with zmodem, xmodem, etc... If you go with PCMCIA, I believe the Amiga 600 and 1200 are limited to a 4mb capacity on the slot, so anything bigger won't work. (I could be wrong on this, I use a 3com etherlink network adapter on mine, and don't play with pcmcia memory too much) I think you just have to run the prepcard application and somehow mount the card as a device. (I believe you can use it as fast memory, but the "fast" part of that is kinda misleading.. slow as hell from what I've heard) Hopefully my rambling has helped a bit.

If your image disks are greater than 720K or just want to try another alternative, you could hook up a floppy simulator cable to your laptop and Amiga and not need any physical disks:

Use PC peripherals with your amiga: http://www.mpdos.com

Do you have Workbench 2.1 by any chance? If so simply type mount pc0: and Amiga will read/write pc disks.

I have Workbench 2.0. It is possible to upgrade to 2.1 on my A600 ?

Yes, but I believe it requires a ROM upgrade. (In which case, I'd just go with 3.1 roms anyway)

Why transfer anything to disk?

You have a 2Mbyte A600, a hard drive and will probably purchase a CF adapter and CF card (and software).

All you need then is http://www.whdload.de

AND some games to go with it:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=kgwhd

BTW: You dont need a kickstart upgrade to upgrade to Workbench 2.1 (but you'll need some way of getting the Workbench 2.1 disks)
