Amiga OS 4 troubleshooting (networking/internet)
« on: February 12, 2008, 05:31:11 AM »
Are there any dedicated Amiga OS4 faq/help websites? I cannot seem to find many accounts from other people on how their particular installation went.

I got around to installing OS4 on my Amiga1200/Blizzard PPC system. It installed fine, but I cannot get the internet/network to run. I am trying to connect to a cable modem via DHCP. I have the ApNet (PCMCIA) adapter, and the New Connection wizard did not automatically detect it. I had to copy cnet.device from OS3.9 into the Devs/Networks folder, and then it seemed to detect it. But after the wizard finishes, it tries to connect, and it times out. It also has a message saying that this type of network does not need a dialer. But no "connection" icon is made in the Connections folder. How am I supposed to go "online"?

I tried playing a little with the settings in Prefs/Internet, but it did not really help. I did not have problems running internet/networking on OS3.9.

Is it possible to run Miami Deluxe on OS4? I tried copying over the files from OS3.9, but it says a TCP/IP stack is already running.

I also cannot get dvplayer to play dvd's. It just produces "Error Opening Stream" errors.

I remember reading a while back that there was some problem with OS4 and 1200 systems.... What was the specific issue? and have there been any patches released?

I had almost the exact same result with my AriadneII. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and created a connection using the Internet prefs editor in the Prefs folder.

I had little trouble using the Prefs/Internet editor, the GUI layout was a lot like Genesis. Also, do you really need DHCP? I had no problems with static IP addresses.

Edit the Startup-Sequence and comment out the line C:AddNetInterfaces.

I haven't tried playing DVD media (no drive), but the error might be due to slow data transfer, if you are using the A1200 IDE connection.

The only issues I am aware of are due to hardware problems in the A1200 design, and lack of support for BlizzardPPC SCSI. No updates have been released at this time.

hi andrew
l got my ppc 1200 online with pcmcia card , l know what your saying though is a pain , in the end l just used the prefs program like othe other guy said.
mind you l got asdl router but should be fine . its cool how when you boot the net already to go no having to click to go online.
in saying that tryed using the serial port to null modem files to another 1200 which done b4 fine under os 3.5 but it sucks on os4 crashed all time must be the emulation of the serial port.
l use cnet.device also l noticed l had to go to go find the cnet.device file and show it where it was to get it to find the pcmcia card , it does seem bit flakey running some 68 k software runs my cnet bbs program yet one door files it wont run , yet if go into early startup menu , and restart ot works fine.

No, that was the OP. Took me about 15 mins to solve my problem, then I was using IBrowse, YAM 2.5 and AmiUpdate just fine.

Personally, I'd rather click a button to go online.

@amiga2000
you could always try amigaworld.net and amigans.net. There are more OS4 users on those forums.

Hi Andrew,

thanks for the tip about commenting out the AddNetInterfaces line in the startup-sequence. It has been a while since I used my Amiga 1200.

So it worked. I can use Miami Deluxe to get connected. I was wondering though - since Miami was not formally "ported" to OS4 PPC, does that mean the JIT emulation kicks in when I run Miami? Or is it running natively in PPC?

I actually cannot use a static IP, since my cable ISP uses DHCP.

I am going to try downloading that PPC Amiga browser I read about.

That would really suck if this OS4 cannot play dvd's on the 1200 IDE...... I was looking forward to playing dvd's on this Amiga.

It's in JIT obviously. As you said, it hasn't been ported to PPC.

That's a different address. You have a LAN (Local Area Network) address, and a WAN (Wide Area Network) address. You can use static addresses on the LAN and DHCP on the WAN with no problems.

Be warned, it needs a couple hundred megabytes of RAM.

You could try copying the VOB files to harddrive.

copying the VOB's would defeat the purpose for me, but it would be good if that works. First, I am going to try MPlayer to see if that works instead.

I noticed though that this Amiga OS4 consumes a LOT of memory. Maybe it is because Miami was running through JIT emulation. I never saw my memory go down to 20MB. When I was running OS3.9, it was ALWAYS 100MB (I have a 128MB on the A1200).

It's not the player that causes a problem, it's the slow speed of the A1200 IDE interface. It can't transfer data fast enough for smooth DVD playback.

OS4 uses around 40MB on my machine, after I disabled Sirion (the native USB stack) and Roadshow (TCP/IP). Check your WBStartup drawer and User-Startup.
