Creating Amiga HD's inside PCs

Hello all,

    My original 80mb from A1200HD died and unfortunately the floppy is also no longer working.
    I took an IBM Travelstar 11gb 2.5hd from an old notebook, plugged through USB inside windows and ran WinUAE.
    After hours figuring out how to completely erase the disk, not to get the "non-RDB" warning messages, I finally reached HDToolBox.
    More 2 hours to find that I needed to run it with uaehf.device.
    Well, after all that, HDToolbox was only able to "see" 160mb. I know that the limit is 4gb, and I'm prepared to loose the other 7, but 160mb!
   Anyone knows where can I find a concise tutorial about how can I do it?

And... also:

- The only way to use all the 11gb would be buying kickstart 3.1 chips and upgrading WB to 3.9?
Or, can I use softkick with WB 3.1?

You need to download updated scsi.device - http://os.amigaworld.de/download.php?id=29

Also you must either upgrade FFS or use SFS. I strongly recommend the latter. SFS is available from http://home.wtal.de/js/

With the new scsi.device and filesystem all of the drive will be usable.

I recommend to download HDInstTools from Aminet, it is better than HDToolBox especially for large drives.

Thanks, I'll try that at night at home.
I'll apply on my WinUAE hardfile:
1) new scsi.device
2) SFS
3) Use HDInstTools

Then, I'll partition my HD: 500mb for OS, and 10.5gb for data. Format it and finally I'll copy all contents of the WinUAE hardfile to the newly formated 500mb primary partition.

Finally, I'll plug it at A1200.

That should work? I'll be able to use all 11gb? Even with WB 3.1 and Kick 3.0?

Hey, I forgot to ask:
1st) "You need to download updated scsi.device"
I downloaded, but I dont know how to install it. There are several files inside a ZIP: 2 dirs:
SCSI_IDE_43_24 and
__MACOSX

inside SCSI_IDE_43_24, several files like this: a4000t.ld.strip

scsi.device is not there, and even if I find it, what should I do with that? copy it to l:?

I downloaded and copied a file called "Smartfilesystem" to my L:.
Is that it? I doubt it...

Can someone help me on that?

IMHO you shouldn't bother with all those old beta patches which only eat up RAM anyway. Remember that you upgrade from 80 MB. Using 4GB will give you more than 50 times the space you have now. If 80M was sufficient until now, 4G should be enough for years.

Run fixhddsize and use the "set to 4GB" button. Then you can use HDToolbox to create partitions as you like without bothering about size limits.

If the button is greyed out, run HDToolbox first, install the drive and delete all partitions, then come back to fixhddsize.

Once the 4GB fill up you can still decice to run fixhddsize again and add the remaining space to the HDD. Perhaps then you are a bit more experienced with unpacking archives and reading documentation (and ignoring Mac HFS fork information).

Anyway, I modified my startup sequence. Added the following line:
LoadV43Module dh0:l/a300.ld.strip REBOOT

It's booting ok, so, I'll be able to format my 11gb disk using sfs?

Now, as the good fellow only posted me the direct link to the updated scsi.device, can someone tell me where should I place the updated one?

If you mean where to put the a300.ld.strip file, wherever you like. L: is a good place.

You must install SFS to RDB using HDInstTools/HDToolBox. Then select SFS to be the partition(s) filesystem and do a Quick Format with WB, partition(s) will be formatted with SFS automatically.

Do make sure you do a quick format as the standard format is not compatible with large drives.

The a300.ld.strip was already placed at L:, after I read the  :rtfm: !

Do I need to place it somewhere OR, I just need to use it as parameter to HDInstTools?

scsi.device is in the kickstart. It is not a file. The a*.ld.strip files are a new version of this which is loaded into RAM to replace the existing version in the kickstart.

HDInstTools does need to be told to use that device, however that should already be set in the tooltypes as it is the default option.

Ok. that's fine.
Now that I already have a300.ld.strip file running, I tried to run HDInsttools.
Unfortunately nothing was detected (remember that I'm running it inside UAE!, trying to format it to use on my real A1200). "No devices found".

The only way I can see the harddisk is running hdtoolbox with "uaehf.device" parameter. But it seems that not all the harddisk is visible like that...

Any ideas?

I tried to use
DEVICE=uaehf.device

Using tooltypes for HDInstTools, but again, nothing was detected...
