Aros - what can I do with it?
« on: February 02, 2008, 07:49:31 PM »
I am getting a free Pentium 3 in a pretty nice condition - its a pity to throw it away so I thought I would use it as a dedicated Aros machine. So, once I install Aros, will I be able to do the normal things people do with computers? That is, read email, browse the net, play some games, type a letter etc.? Thanks!

Possibly... if it has a supported network card then you are in luck :-)

@Everblue

Email and some games = yes.

Web browsing and letters = no.

Browse the software on the Aros Archives to see what you can and can't do.

Web browser bounty information can be found here.  Typesetting known as TeX is nearing completion.

aros are now as usefull as a zx spectrum used as a doorstoper.. but in the future if people start concentrate on the important stuff like the x86 version and finish it, and doing all the applications that is needed as web browsers, build in uae emulators etc.. then it will be very useful. but as usually the focus are on the wrong things like eifka support for example and many other none important things... it will take 5-10 years or more before its any use for the users that only want to use it and are not inetrested of how it work etc.

SAM440 and EFIKA are both in active developement.  EFIKA is being done by Tigger who wasn't a AROS dev so his involvement has done nothing to delay other projects.  Your guestimate for time is way off IMO, but time will tell.  AROS is marching forward, each year we get new software and improvements on the existing software.

Even better, burn it to CD and use it as a coaster, or maybe a small frisbee.

There is no time frame! its there when someone (anyone) adds the functions you need.

@4pLay
I know that, but my question was based on Dammy's answer, i wanted to know if he had a time frame in mind for even a simple working install on a x86 machine with minimal sata and network options.
