Faster backdrop and icons loading on OS39?
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:01:00 PM »
After boot it takes too much time (for my taste) before the backdrop image is loaded on my Workbench.

Is there a way to speed up backdrop image loading ? And make faster loading of icons into Dock?

I use 800x600x16bit screenmode and OS39/Cybergraphx.

Reduce image quality?

AfaOS speeds up icon loading. You can use PPC datatypes for pictures if you have one :)

Make sure the resolution and colour depth of your backdrop matches your screenmode. In other words, scale your image to 800x600 and set the colour depth to 16 bit. That way it won't have to be scaled and/or dithered to match the screenmode when it loads.

The background image is already 800x600, 256 colours.

Is there no patch or replacement for WBpattern under OS39/CGX to speed up image loading?

256 colours is 8 bit, not 16 bit. Try converting the file to a 16 bit colour depth and see if that makes any difference.

You could always try a different datatype. They vary a lot in speed. I like WarpDT. It's shareware, but worth paying for in my opinion.

If it is in 256 colors why not convert it into IFF format which will load faster than JPG.

I'm not going to go into what IFF means here...

Warp Datatypes are definitely worth the money.
You will see a big difference in speed.
