Is it possible to run A500/A600/A1200 on a VGA monitour?
« on: July 23, 2003, 04:34:37 PM »
Hi!

I wonder if its possible to run A500/A600/A1200 on a VGA monitour? If it works, what do I need to do it?

Thank You!

It is possible - But has problems.

Basically, the amiga video mode frequency goes lower than your standard pc ( i believe its 15khZ on an amiga whereas a pc monitor goes as low as 30KhZ). With a standard Amiga - VGA convertor, you can use WB but some games / demos wont work. You need a scandoubler for that so that its on the 30KhZ frequency.

I think.

ALso...

you can cut the lead of a VGA monitor and solder SUBD amiga video socket to it. Apparently its WELL fiddly, but i think the wiring diagram is on aminet.

cheers

I know you can do that with a 2000 that has a video card and you should be able to do it with the 1200. For the 500 and 600 you may be able to do it with an adapter, but you have to keep in mind that the refesh rate on the 500 is very low (around 15 Mhz I think). If you use a multisinc monitor you should have no problem. Good luck. :hammer:

@Thellenbow

You will probs need a scandoubler, i dont know of a monitor that goes down to 15hz.

I found a VGA converter on Ebay

would this work to play old games on a Amiga 600?

Well it works for screen promotable games, like Colonization  :-D  :-D  :-D
But most games (99%) wont work with a VGA converter.

For promoting screens just use NewMode from aminet..

On 1200, yes.

500/600 needs scandoubler. I'm running my 500 on a trusty old 1084 (without the S :-( ), and the Access is currently being used for Super Frog on an industrial 30 inch video monitor at the office *humming softly*

Muhaha, I love this job! :-)

1) NEC 3D (possibly, not sure about this one) ???
2) CTX AD-1970 (this one I know for sure because I have one).  Unfortunately, it's not being made any more (stopped quite a while ago).

I think it's like this... the A1200 outputs native screenmodes ranging from 15kHz through to 31kHz plus.

VGA monitors' lowest scanrate is 30KHz-31KHz (seems to vary a bit), therefore any 15KHz modes will not work with them without a scandoubler that doubles this rate to 30KHz+. Optionally a "flickerfixer" will cure interlace flicker too.

Old games and demos that bang the hardware, i.e. are not "retargetable" will usually output a 15KHz signal so will not work without a SS. Games/demos that allow you to choose screenmode will work if you select a 30KHz+ one.

However, some A1200 modes (e.g. Multiscan Productivity) are output at above 31KHz anyway, so these should work. It depends what you want to do.

There were a fair few "dual sync" monitors that scanned in both ranges, CBM 1940/42/50/60, Microvitec 1438/1538/GPM1701 etc. Have a look
here:

Amiga Monitors

I use a Microvitec 1438 on my A1200 and a GPM1701 on my PC, and because the 15kHz modes are video friendly, if I got a new PC monitor the 1701 would go to my PS2.
