USB hardware
« on: January 12, 2008, 05:35:24 PM »
Hi, Today I received my USB hardware from AmigaKit. I'd like to share some thoughts.

After unwrapping the box first thing I saw was a notice basicly telling me if I connect it the wrong way it will most likely go up in smoke. OK, better be carefull then. The installation manual asumes you are using an A1200, I have an A4000 with an X-Surf. But I do have a clock-port so it should work. Were is pin 1 located on the clock port of my X-surf? After searching through my box of manuals I find the manual of the X-surf but nothing about the location of pin 1 off the X-surf. It will blow up if connected wrong keeps going through my mind. So I go on the internet. I found it.

When everything is installed I boot my Amiga. No smoke so everything appears to be right. Phew. Now how to use the USB hardware? The USB-hardware came with a floppy so I install all the contents of it. Fiddling with the software it turns out to be a DEMOVERSION. What the .... DEMOVERSION?, I just paid 90 euro's and all I get is a demoversion that times out after a few minutes??? What is this? This really really annoyed me, not because I have to spend 40 euro's again but because this came as a surprise. I'm not saying I don't want to spend a little more, but I don't like the fact that I just didn't know. And what do you need with a demoversion that times-out after a few minutes regardless of what you are doing with your USB port?

Just to share my experience with Amiga and USB. I'm sure when I get the whole lot I'll be happy.

Correction after post 17: I did receive a full version, no need to buy a registration key. There was a problem with a device driver which is now solved!

I guess its a Subway USB? Normally all USB cards from E3B have a full licensed OEM version of Poseidon, the USB stack.

Well, I don't seem to have received a licence so I probably have to buy it. Sigh. I don't understand, what do you need the software for if you don't have any hardware? Why need to register then? Is there some other software I can use with my Subway ?

You should talk to your dealer why you don't have a full version.

I really can't help it when people are not able to read the manual. This is so annoying.

The Subway comes with a fully licenced Poseidon, every E3B hardware did. Nuff said before I start getting bold.

Bye...

Well, obviosly it's not clear enough. I've read the manual and all it tells me is how to install the hardware. The .guide that came with it doesn't seem to tell me how to get it working.

If you know how, please don't get bold, just share the information please.

I may be wrong here but doesnt Poseidon run in full mode when supported hardware is detected?

Maybe the subway isnt installed right. Maybe the X-surf clockport is not supported?

As Chris has pointed out, the Subway USB has a prepaid OEM licence so every Subway is supplied with a un-restricted Posedion - no need to re-register.

Uh.,
How am I suppose to enable the full version?
See the log, it tells me I have a demo version.
If I click on the 'register' button, it tells me I don't need it.

It doesn't work.
I don't get it at all.
What page in the manual do I need to read?
were in the .guide can I read what is going on?

0-hub.class: New device 'Flash Drive' at port 1. Very nice.

After launch I get the following message:

0-hub.class: I'm in love with hub 'Highway/Subway Root Hub'.
20-Licence: Sorry, but this licence key is not valid for Poseidon V3.x! Please upgrade.
 0-poseidon.library: PoPo kicks ass.

I've got the latest version by using the update button.
Can somebody please shed some light on this subject?

(uninformed guess)

Your SubWay seems to be somewhat older stock, meaning it's only registered vor Poseidon 2.x ....

Try:
http://aminet.net/package/driver/other/PoseidonMain

..... mmmmmm

/me wonders what my 2002 HighWay would be registered for if I hadn't upgraded the key  :-o
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Thank you, that seems to do the trick.
So the package was shipped with V3.x while the registration stuff is for V2.x?

So much for reading the manual!

On 2nd hand, correct that, using V2.x doesn't work either.
Still failure and demo timeout.

:(

I give up!

Perhaps there is a bug with the software? I'm now using v2.x and I still get some german error message.

Schreibfehler 42 bei block 14402, It's just a normal usb-disc working perfectly on my PC.

But the error log inside poseidon keeps telling me the demoversion times out. (Withint 1 minute??, isn't that a bit too fast anyway?)

Have you tried looking on the disk for the key, and injecting it into Poseidon?

You know, Poseidon really is the only software you can obtain to use USB hardware and generally, is very easy to set up. Even if there was competition for it, I would still use it.

Just calm down, go back to the instructions and look for any readme files on the disk.

And for your information, Platon42 (who answered you earlier) is the guy who wrote it, so he *should* know about Licences ;)

Yes I have looked on the disc, no I couldn't find a keyfile. Yes I've read the manual. If I have an OEM registration I don't know were that is. What I have received is the following:

1: USB hardware + cables and connectors
2: Printed manual telling me how to install the hardware
3: Disc containing the Poseidon v3.x software
4: Notice about warranty

That's it.

If all seems so simply, why can't I then get a simple answer? What do I need to do? Should I stand on my head?

The hardware seems to work, coz when I connect my USB disc (256 Mb) it sees it, I can even start writing files to it. But after 1 or 2 minutes I get a germen error message. If I then open the prefs I can see, DEMO Licence timeout.

I've used both v2.x and v3.x
