power a 3,5" HD in a plain A1200
« on: January 08, 2008, 07:46:57 PM »
hi,

There are many cheap 2,5"->3,5" HD adapters. I have some.
They are working fine (I use one in my A1200T).

When I want to use a 3,5" HD in a plain A1200, I can't feed the HD directly from the PSU.
Is there a way to power a 3,5" HD inside a plain A1200?

Firstly, see post above.

Secondly, yes - you can take power from the floppy supply.

 The simple answer is YES!

But not with two little problems:

 1- If you have 3.0 ROM, probably you need to soft-reset your Amiga in order it recognize the hd (due the time of the hd spin-up);

2- Heat issues (caused by the physically large hd blocking the air flow).

Goodbye people.

Hmm, there is a way, as I bought a rather thin Eyetech 2.5Gb 3.5" drive many years ago that fitted internally with adaptor cables. That was with 3.0 ROM, as I fitted 3.1 ROM when I built it in a tower and put OS3.5 on it. :pint:

so I have to solder a cable between the floppy connector and the harddisk.

I see +12V  gr gr +5V near the connector of my harddisc.
Is there anyone who knows the voltages of the four pins of my floppy connector (A1200) ?

My 1200 uses a 3.5 inch disk. I've never had any problems
It draws power from the disk driver connector. I had 4 differents HD over the years and it always worked.

You will have to remove the shielding, and cover your HD with some insulating material to avoid short circuits (i'v used carton...)

if you buy something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-TO-3-5-2-5-HD-HDD-IDE-ATA-SATA-CABLE-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ160196586472QQihZ006QQcategoryZ41994QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

you can use the powersupply it comes with for your hd and keep it external. (it's 4 pin molex.) you could use a rounded ide cable also out to the drive also...

i prefer a tower though! :-)
i will bless them that bless you. i will curse them that curse you. gods promise to his chosen people the jews.
