StopMenu (Startbar)
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:03:11 PM »
Hi all,

I'm trying to get a Windows StartBar lookalike for my miggy, so my girlfriend can be more used to using the miggy ;)

I didn't find too many on Aminet, but the latest program seems to be StopMenu. It is now also free.

I installed it ok and it works, but I'll need to do some tweaking to get the colours better.

However, a major problem is that when I have it set to "Hide Task Bar", whenever I go to the screen bottom in IBrowse, my miggy resets straightaway. Presumably something to do with the bar trying to come into the screen & crashing with IB.

So, I have to have the Bar showing all the time, not quite good looking!

Has anyone come across this and fixed it? Or, does anyone have any other suggestions for a Star bar?

Finally, StopMenu incorporates a meter to assess how much CPU, Chip & Fast RAm is being used. My miggy seems to be using around 90% of Fast Ram continously, when I'm not doing much! If IB, IFX, PGS etc are NOT running, why is so much of my Fast Ram being used? I have 192mb ;)

Thanks, in advance.

@wurzel

What is your Amiga Config and how many colors are you running WB on?  I suggest you run at least 64 colors.

Also, to fix IBrowse....put it on a seperate Public screen. You will have IBrowse use its own colors and it will look better.

Alternative to STOP-MENU (And wayyyyyyy better minus the icons) Get Tools Daemon and Magic Menu............this is truly Amiga's Start Menu but at the top.

Also get:

AmigaAIM - AOL/AIM Instant Messenger
JabberWocky - MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger etc...
WookieChat - IRC
AmIRC - IRC
AmiPODDER - PodCasting
AmiDICTION - Online Dictionary
AmiTradeCenter - Kazzaa/LimeWire PTP type software
AMPlifier - WinAMP for Amiga
AmigaAMP - WinAMP for Amiga with gfx cards
SCALA MM300 or 400 - PowerPoint for the Amiga but better!

All these apps will get your girlfriend happy that the Amiga can do all these as well like a PC.

Show off Amiga to your girlfriend properly, make sure you have all these....at the very least.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Hi leirbag28

Thanks for your reply. Here are my responses:

What is your Amiga Config and how many colors are you running WB on?  I suggest you run at least 64 colors.

Look at my sig for my system. I'm using a True Colour screen ;)

Also, to fix IBrowse....put it on a seperate Public screen. You will have IBrowse use its own colors and it will look better.

It's on it's own MUI screen running in full colour.

Alternative to STOP-MENU (And wayyyyyyy better minus the icons) Get Tools Daemon and Magic Menu............this is truly Amiga's Start Menu but at the top.

I already have Tools Daemon running at the top of the screen, and I now have StopMenu at the bottom! I have yet to get Magic Menu.

Also get:

AmigaAIM - AOL/AIM Instant Messenger
JabberWocky - MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger etc...

I use Jabberwocky, don't need AmigaAim.

WookieChat - IRC
AmIRC - IRC

I use both but Wookie is still a bit unstable on my system. I'm trying to track it down but I think it has something to do with graphical smilies :(

AmiPODDER - PodCasting
AmiDICTION - Online Dictionary

Got both ;) I even have an alias (Spell) to start amidiction from a shell.

AmiTradeCenter - Kazzaa/LimeWire PTP type software

mmm, will have a look at this one, sounds interesting. Currently, I still use Amster.

AMPlifier - WinAMP for Amiga
AmigaAMP - WinAMP for Amiga with gfx cards

Again, I have both ;)

SCALA MM300 or 400 - PowerPoint for the Amiga but better!

I have Scala MM400 but prefer to use Hollywood, because Scala is only AGA whereas I can use Hollywood on my graphic card.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I still want to resolve the problem somehow.

Wow Amster still works?   I thought Napster was down years ago???

You Got SCALA MM400?  dont be turned off by AGA..........PC have gfx cards and use Powerpoint..........I have AGA and use SCALA.............My presentations are better than theirs many many times!

I use HAM8 where necessary and all kinds of tricks with SCALA............the viewers dont notice 256 color or 16 million...........they just notice the cool presentation.

Get AmigAIM anyway.it might be better than the AIM implemented into Jabberwocky.

get Magic Menu..it simply makes ToolsDaemon  look better.

I think the probelms you are having might be related to the Gfx card. This is what I suspect now.

Yes, but there are other servers which I can connect to. PM if you want my list.

Yes, I am not put off, I actually find it easier in some respects than Hollywood. But it is old now ...

Ok, I'll give it a whirl ;)

I'm not worried how TD looks, it's just I wanted a PC type for my girlfriend. I found AmiStart which looks really cool, it's for graphic card equipped miggys only but with transparent toolbars, it looks really good. However, I did manage to find that TD had an update so I could dispose of TDRX (sp?), the Arexx script which was a quick fix for OS3.9. TD works just fine and in fact, if you have both installed, you can go either way. Nothing like having a choice ;)

Not sure, I seem to be running short on Chip Ram slowly. I have IBrowse, MicroDot & AmIRC running all the time. Maybe there is a memory leak somewhere?

I've just set up EZCron to run the Flush proggie I picked up years ago, which retrieves some RAm, every 30 mins. That seems to help, a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions ;)

I recommend StartMenu2 for a lower-end Amiga. For higher-end i'd try AmiStart.
