Offended by OS4!
« on: January 07, 2008, 03:48:29 AM »
Okay, I am seriously offended by the OS4 Documentation's misspelling of the work Kernal!  They spelled it Kernel! :-P

I think you will find that it is you who misspelled kernel.

From the wikipedia "Kernal" page
Quote

The (completely different) OS core in the 16/32-bit Commodore Amiga series was called the Amiga ROM Kernel, using the correct spelling of kernel.

So There!

BAH!  I could write that in Wikipedia too if I wanted.

In the early days of microcomputers, there were lots of serious spelling errors.  A lot of people designing hardware and software weren't necessarily good spellers; and the people doing the documentation didn't necessarily understand the context of things.

One version of the C=64 manual kept referring to the 'reserved words' as 'reversed words', and I always wondered what the heck was backwards about them!

Check your Amiga manuals and see if it wrong. (it's not)

We are not talking about the C64 we are talking about the Amiga. The "kernel" is called a "kernel" and MODERATOR EDIT - PERSONAL ATTACK

Now lets never speak of this matter again.

Blatant personal attacks are not permitted.
Criticize ideas, not people. Excessive flaming will not be tolerated. Users who verbally assault the character or person of other posters on a regular basis will be banned. Name calling is best left to grade school. Moderator's judgment applies here. "You are wrong" is not a personal attack; "You are an idiot" is. "You do not have all of the facts" is not a personal attack; "you are obviously clueless" is. These are generalized examples, but you get the idea.

I've learned from this post the Commodore-only word KERNAL. Only knew the other one. But I understand the thread was a JOKE about spelling / misspelling. Don't take it too serious, man! After all, it's only for fun (I thought Amiga is the fun computer)

I maintain a site on everything, Amiga too (in Spanish)

C, as in the programming language? It's the follow up to B, silly! ;-)

So what came before B? A? Not quite. Here's the lineage C follows:

ALGOL 58/IAL -> ALGOL 60 -> CPL -> BCPL -> B -> C

I still like the fact that C++ means C+1. Great geeky humour. :-)

I always liked that the first page in every C manual says something like "C is named after B, which was created by Bell Labs.  Now, it's obvious what B is named after isn't it?"  And, I'd always think, "NO!  It's not!  Was it named after Bell Labs or A???? ARGH!!

Algol is cool!  C sucks!  Actually, it's been years since I remembered what Algol code actually looked like.

Somewhere in a box in my basement, I have a Apple ][ programming book that explains why the Apple Colonel should be called the Apple Core instead.  I always thought it was weird that they thought it was called the Colonel!  Didn't they mean Kernal? :-P  And yes, they did mention the Kernal.  And whatever the heck they called the TRaSh-80 base software.

Never done any ALGOL programming, but I've done some C programming. How clear is it that the two languages are linked? What features did you like with ALGOL coding?

Really you can call it whatever you want. It's like the OCS/ECS/AGA chip names which added some extra character to Amigas.

Completely OT, but I wanted to complement you on your sig AMC258, very creative, took me a bit of time before I worked it out. :-)

I'm a Pascal programmer, but I can read and understand C as much as I dislike it.  If you know C and Pascal, and you look at Algol, your first thought is that you can see how C and Pascal were both eventually derived from Algol, and you can see how they went totally seperate ways.

Coding in Algol on a big heavy loud old minicomputer is just pure fun.  I used to have a Wang the size of 4 A2000's (okay, don't blame me if you don't really know what a Wang is! ) and I would write really stupid Algol programs on it just because I didn't know what else to do with it.  I had free electricity back then and I'd use my Wang to heat my apartment.  Mostly it just displayed the boot screen:

Code: [Select]

W   W   A   N N N  GGG
W   W  A A  NNN N G
W W W AAAAA N N N GGGGG
W W W A   A N NNN G   G
 WWW  A   A N N N  GGGG

Thanks!  I really appreciate that, I wasn't sure if anyone would care for it.  I was pretty tired one night and I was posting something about OS4 and A500's and I typed hSO without even thinking about it!  And then, I realised I can type most of the Amiga model names that way and quite a few other words!

PS does anyone remember the billboard ad that said "Don't you wish you had a Harry Wang?"

@HenryCase

some point that it should be called ++C instead of C++, because IIRC its increased after the operation when you put ++ second (someone will explain it better)
Better sorry than worry.
