lcd rgb confusion.
« on: January 06, 2008, 02:53:51 PM »
hi all,

i've been through the manual of the lcd monitor i was going to use with my amiga. which a just a tft monitor and i have an external tv box. the manual doesn't mention a 15khz frequency. but in the specs later on it says:

"rgb input, analogue  15-wired sub-d connector."

this one is a medion 32117.

should i buy an rgb adaptor? :-?

@monami:

What exactly do you mean with ´external tv box´? Is that an external TV tuner for the Medion monitor? If so, if it comes with a full-blown (that is with all RGB signals connected and used) SCART connection you could always connect thru that box.

Have you already bought the monitor? If not, try and find a LCD TV with VGA and SCART connectors. Those should well be capable of displaying your Amiga´s output.
Get a SAM, while you can! The new AMIGA is here!

i was just considering the monitor on its own for a minute...

ok the tv box takes a composite in and puts it on to a monitor crt or lcd. there is no scart on the tv box. (only on my other lcd tv.) there is also a pc in and out connector vga. this is connected to my belkin kvm... so in i will check if it does rgb...

it's something like this.

You could use the Amiga on it's own with the TFT monitor with an RGB adapter (SYNC dongle)using VGA/DBLNTSC screen modes but it would only work for workbench and OS legal apps. It wouldn't work for most games.

That TV adapter as you say only does composite (for the Amiga side) and so the picture quality will be low.

If you have one, you may as well use the TV input on your PC gfx card as a free scandoubler.

wouldn't the rgb adaptor to the vga of the tv box effectively be a scandoubler? i wanted 800x600. :-?

No. That TV box is AFAIK not an RGB scandoubler.

The VGA input of the TV Box is only for 31KHz passthrough (i.e. a PC)

mmm...

well that's not my one. but it's a similar type. i actually have 2. one also has s-video. not sure if in or out yet. i don't mind composite for games but wanted 800x600 for the net. just to try it out. (long term want!) i basically just wanted to know if i would be wasting my time  getting the rgb adaptor.
but i might get one to test and use on my other lcd tv anyway. one of these has to work... :-)

You wont get a non interlaced 31KHz mode of that res out of an Amiga without a gfx card. In 31KHz modes at 60Hz the best you'll get is 640x480 + a bit of overscan.

An Amiga rgb adapter connected to to the VGA passthrough on the TV box and using the workbench screenmode dblNTSC or VGA (both 31KHz modes) will work.

"For higher resolutions, I'd use the rgb port with an adapter, with the super-72 monitor driver, you can get up to 800x600 resolution."

is that not true?
