Help-Dir not empty delete error after SMBFS crash
« on: January 05, 2008, 08:03:38 PM »
Hi there,
I just attempted to copy some files from my XP PC to my A1200 via the network (Using KS3.0+WB3.0+DOPUS+SMBFS+AmiTCP3.0B2+3C589D drivers). During the transfer it seems that SMBFS must of hit some files with crasy long file names, since rather than displaying the usual "file not found" error message, SMBFS caused a software failure, and has since left me with a directory that I cannot delete on the destination drive.

Usually DOPUS just comes up with the "File not found" error when it can't find a file due to the file name being too long, but this time it's crashed the system. Inpspecting what files did get copied and those that were not shows that the copy halted on some saved web pages with 50+ character file names.

EDIT: ~84 Character file name(s) caused the crash...

Hope someone can help me get rid of the corrupt dir,
Hodgkinson.

FFS?

you can't delete the content of the dir? or the dir/drawer itself?

Just basic standard whatevers-normal file system.
The DIR im trying to delete (Which comes up with the "Dir not empty" error) contains one further drawer. Unfortunatly, asking the system to delete this "Deeper" drawer does absolutely nothing.

EDIT: Ooops, see above

So when you delete the child drawer it just stays there? Any error? What if you try to delete it from the shell?

Ooops, the child drawer is the one with the "Dir not empty" error when you try to delete it.

So the dir I can't delete is just a drawer that appears to be empty, but the system say's it isn't. And shell diddn't help...

EDIT: FYI, the drawer is on the last partition of the system, well away from the OS. The HDD grumbled when I first rebooted, but not on any sucessive reboots.

Can you CD in to the directory which you can't delete?

Yup, I can make dirs and delete dirs from the broken Dir. I hoped that making a new file, then deleting it would fix the problem, but the broken dir still says that its not empty when I try to delete it.

DOPUS doesn't show any remenants in there, so from what I can see it should be empty. Unless theres a file fragment in there from the initial network copy thats invisible to me.

Hmm can't think of any way around it other than to copy everything except the corrupt directory to another partition, then format the corrupt partition and copy your data back.

Doh. That was what I was thinking.
(Doesn't help having a 100MB hardfile for PCx in the middle of that lot...) on a normal A1200 IDE.

Thanks for the help,
Hodgkinson.

What happens if you enter

delete dirname all

in a shell window ?

If everything else fails and if the HDD (the entire HDD, not the partition) is smaller than 4GB, you can use detache to remove the directory entry. Note that detache only removes the entry, it does not free the allocated space. You might have to wait for disk-validator to free the space.

Bye,
Thomas

Thanks for the tip, Thomas - I've just been and reformatted the partition before I got your message...That got rid of the drawer!
There was only about 60MB of stuff on there (The PCx hardfile was only ~40MB), and the whole partition is only 400MB.

Thanks for the advise, folks,
Regards,
Hodgkinson.
