Perpetual dates fixed in Amiga OS?
« on: January 02, 2008, 06:08:50 PM »
Amigas got through Y2K just fine, but there is date in our future when older versions of the OS will stop interpretting the current time currectly.

Was this oversight ever corrected in OS3.5 or 3.9?

The year when the clock stops is 2078 IIRC, so I won`t worry about a fix.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

If you think Amiga OS has a problem, 32 bit Unix systems will have a big problem even earlier:

@ pjhutch

IIRC, this is Amiga's same problem (a 32-bit number) or very similar to it.  I think our problen date happens about the same time.

There used to be an article (Amiga specific) that went into a lot detail about this; I can't find it now.

I for one hope that in 30 years there will be a new 64-bit AmigaOS running on the current CPU platform which will alleviate this problem. 64-bit gets you out something like 290 Billion years from 1970.

However, if nothing happens to move AmigaOS onto new 32-bit hardware even then I guess in 2038, my clock will be wrong. Oh, wait it already is because I had to take the battery off the motherboard to keep it from leaking and killing it.

Let's hope that we see some new hardware in less than 10 years.
I think, Therefore - Amiga....

@ Tenacious

I think this is what you're referring to.

In summary: there will be trouble in 2046 and 2078.

Thanks Matt!

I'll be 86 at the first hurdle.  Some clever programmer will come up with something by then.  I'd hate to give up my Amigas if I don't have to.

Gawd! I'll be 78 for the first hit and a grand old 110 for the second!

I just hope I have all my marbles without worrying if the clock on my Amiga is correct! :-)

Actually, I'll probably have dropped off the twig by then anyway!  :-D

Dammit, we can't do a "still waiting for OS4" joke any more ;-)
