OS4 installation

Well, I stripped my A3000UX down and moved it so I can get at it.  I copied the OS4 install CD onto a hard drive partition and unplugged the CD to make absolutely sure I don't have termination issues.

I got more patient and let it brew for half an hour and finally it's doing something that looks like OS4!  And, my PPC chip is actually getting REALLY hot.  Good thing I've got a 24" fan on it!

Learned something already!  Disable DF1, DF2, and DF3 by jumper if you're not using them, or the install will hang for about 5 minutes per disconnected drive and doesn't tell you until it eventually gives you an error req.

Okay, it hung up again so I powered down and jumpered out the floppies.  Upon booting, I got to the point where the video card is activated and then it hung.  I waited an eternity (twice) to make sure it wasn't getting ready to do something.  Then, I got brave and went to the Early Startup Menu.

THANK YOU FOR THIS FEATURE!! :-)  :-)  I was really afraid it wouldn't be there.

I selected the my boot cd partition and almost instantly I am to the installation screen I expected to see all along!

 :angry: Well, it don't work.  I finally got the installation down after hitting OK a half million times, and it doesn't boot right, and I found that there are corrupt files on the installed drive, which are not corrupt on the installation disk!

If its an IDE hard disk change the Max Transfer Size to 0x1fe00 to limit the max no of bytes copied at a time to HD. That should fix the corruption.

which filesystem are you using?

If is FFS, you have to set the DOS\7 (long filenames variant)

The whole problem was PFS3, which apparenly OS4 doesn't like.  I had to install to a temporary drive, and I will copy the installation over to my RAID later.  I forgot that the partition I was using was switched to PFS3.

Everything is installed and working now.  In fact I'm typing from it right now.

Now I get to look forward to putting the hardware back together, and then dealing with all the software I have to reconfigure all over again....
