Opera on the Amiga system?

Doh! Looks like the European Union is suing Microshaft again!. Hope they win and if they do, will Opera be available on the Amiga platform? just curious...Tony

Much agreed.  There is too much of that going on around here.  I honestly don't believe yapping about it is going to convince someone who can/will do it to do it if they aren't already.  OS4 on Mac and all that.

That said, with OS4 gone 'classic', maybe we have enough of a market that we can get Opera.  I'd sure rather see IBrowse get updated though.

If someone ports a decent JRE (Java ME?), the Java version of Opera would run. Lots of coding to do. Keep your eye on the WebKit AROS port. If the user interface is implemented in a portable or at least modular fashion, a port to Amiga OS is certainly a possibility.

The answer to the question about Opera is that there was, years and years ago, either a project or just a lot of talk about a project to port Opera to Amiga. Then, nothing happened, as far as I know. Certainly, if it had been done, this thread would have been two posts long. The second post containing a link to where it could be obtained.

well u can get mini opera running on most cell phones

so l dont really understand why its such problem getting decent web browser on the amiga.
it whould really make me use my amiga ppc everday like l used too. then u be looking at updating more software and making the amiga platform worth investing in.

You know, it is theoretically possible. It's written for the right processor (PowerPC), so it's "just" a matter of installing it and getting a whole bunch of device drivers right.

I think Opera moaned at the EU about IExploiter being evil or something. Google will know more.

Anyway, Opera's a closed source program and an AmigaOS native version of it will never happen unless the OS fairy turns OS4 into a commercially viable platform again.

Let me guess, you saw this on Slashdot? In any case, you clearly didn't read TFA. Opera could be ported to Amiga, the developers don't need Microsoft's permission. The complaint made was all about whether Microsoft was abusing their position in the Windows world.

Not entirely accurate. The Opera developers will port the browser to any platform providing it's feasible and you pay them enough money. That's why it's available for such diverse platforms (IBM PC, mobile phones, Nintendo DS, etc...). The issue is the Amiga community would have to raise the funds for the port, and considering we are getting some better web browsers soon (Sputnik, Traveller) I don't think many people would see the need.

If you do see the need, feel free to contact them to ask how much it would cost.

I thought there was an initiative to port Opera to the
Amiga back in like 1996-97 but the Amiga community
ultimately failed to muster the support.

Aweb may be open source, but as far as I can tell development is quite slow. Hopefully development will speed up soon. In the mean time, the most exciting browser development is being done for Traveller, which will also be open source. You can track development here:

I hope Aweb and Traveller merge into one project, which is possible if Aweb moves to the WebKit rendering engine.
