What do think of OS4.0 Classic Version?
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:46:38 PM »
Just wondering what you think of it so far and what programs you might be trying from OS4Depot

So far I like the way you can just plug a PC monitor onto your GFX card and insert the OS4 BootFloppy & CD to get the installation started. Then after selecting your GFX card the installation continues in 800x600 16bit screenmode 8-)

I also like the way I was able to download an OS4 version of my favourite DirectoryOpus4 (directoryopus.lha) from here

And I really like the way I was able to simply edit the icon ZIC to 'oktagon.device' and 'Unit 5' and have my SCSI Zip 100 working on my A4000 :-)

Haven't been using it too much yet, on my A1200/Mediator the gfx are corrupted and slow so I'm waiting for an update from HJF which will take care of the problems

On my A4000T/CV64 gfx card I've been using it briefly an evening after installing it and so far I'm impressed, tried Tunenet and did some web browsing and watched an mpeg movie with DVPlayer.
I'ts feels faster and more powerful that MorphOS PowerUP

Do any 68k games work at all? I heard you could get Eye Of The Beholder II working directly under AmigaOne OS4 (one of my favourite games 8-) )!

I installed OS4 on my Mediator based machine with a VooDoo 3 3000 card, but every time I got to the CGFX WB screen on the VooDoo the system hung. I tried to go back to my original OS3.9 as I have been so disappointed.

There is nowhere near enough information about how to get the setup right for a Mediator on an A1200 with OS4, in fact nothing in the quickstart booklet, that is if they have actually got it to work reliably with the basic setup from the CD and floppy disk for an A1200 with a Mediator.

So far, very disappointed, and no information on Acube or Hyperions site to ask or offer any information as to how to fix these problems.

I wrote to Hyperion a couple of weeks ago, and I have still not had a reply as yet.

In fact I am thinking of returning the software to the supplier, but tried to contact AmigaKit yesterday, and their phone rang out, and then seemed to get picked up, but no automatic service, which is usual, or anyone else answering, just no response.

How did you install your A1200, by way of the clean/new partition install method with the floppy boot disk, or via the install from OS3.x method ?

@Nearly-Right

I am sorry to hear you had difficulties.  OS4 classic should work "out of the box" with the Mediator and Voodoo.  There are not extra drivers required.  You do have to pay attention to the installation which, I believe, asks you if you have a Mediator or not.

Unfortunately a bug was discovered after release with the "LT" version of the Mediator - which is for A1200's.  A fix is coming soon, so hang in there.  OS4 classic is definately worth the wait and will breath new life into your system.

LOL
I _tried_ to install in on my GREX4000D amiga.
I deleted a parition COMPLETELLY from 3.9
then I cold-booted the amiga.
the OS4 installation begun, I made an OS4 partition in the empty space (thouhj media toolbox corrected something on the HD, luckily it still loads OK)
so after a lenghty installation, I finally rebooted... but wait! not that fast keropi! where is the OS4 partition? nowhere? what do u mean nowhere? it must be somewhere!
seriously NO, there is no OS4 partition to select from early startup-menu...
maybe the fact that I use PFS3 is to blame?

edit: amazing, after 3 days I booted from it! though the partitions after the OS4 one are greyed out, it boots!
os4+aga is not very nice btw

I am wondering if some of the problems with using OS4 stem from using an Ethernet 3Com 3CCE589EC PCMCIA card I tried to use with OS4.

I have never needed or used the PCMCIA port on OS3.x for anything other than a Squirrel SCSI before, and I of course know there are problems with the resets with a PCMCIA Ethernet card with an A1200.

I have installed the CardReset, and CardPatch files onto my OS3.9 system with the entry in my Startup-sequence after the setpatch entry as follows: CardReset TICKS 15 FORCE AUDIO YES, and on the next line CardPatch, but when I boot my machine with the card fully inserted in the PCMCIA slot it stops/hangs just after the Workbench screen title appears, and before any graphics/backdrop/icons appear.

If I insert the card after bootup, and virtually as soon as I use my Spider/Mediator based USB mouse the system locks up/hangs.

I have an 060/240Mhz PPC Blizzard card (Revision 1 I seem to remember), and I have seen that there may be problems with using the software with such a card/CPU so wondered if there is a hardware fix that sorts the problem out?

Or any other advice about how to use the 3Com Ethernet card correctly, from anyone using such a card, thanks. ;-)

@Keropi

Cool!

Can you post a screenshot of OS4 on AGA...?

Im curious as to what it looks like/how bad it is... if I got a PPC Accelerator + OS4, AGA would be the only thing I could run on, unless I bought a tower + mediator + voodoo (expensive)

:-)
Machines:
- A1200, Blizzard 1260 w/ 64MB RAM, 1.2GB HD, PCMCIA WiFi, AGA w/ RGB Adapter, OS3.9
- Pegasos I, G3 600Mhz, 512MB, Radeon 9200se, 80GB HD, AmigaKit WiFi Card, MOS 1.4.5
- Mac Mini, G4 1.5ghz, 512MB (1GB Soon), Radeon 9200 64MB, 80GB HD, OSX 10.5 (Leopard)
- PCs, Laptops... *yawn*... :D

 This is good to hear!
Have you perform any OS4 Vs MOS benchmarks to see if you get more FPS from games like shogo or Heretic2? Less frame-skipping while playing movies with Amp and Frogger?

Isn't there a driver for the Cybervision 8mb Permedia card attached to the CyberStorm?

Does MOS 1.4.5 have a driver for that config?

(Too lazy to look it up myself, I am on vacation this weekend and typing from the hotel room)

When going through the OS4 installation you have a choice of these:-

AGA
CybervisionPPC/BlizzardVisionPPC
CyberVision3D
CyberVision64
Domino
Graffity
Merlin
Picasso II
Picasso IV
Piccolo
Piccolo SD64
Pixel 64
Retina BLT
Spectrum
Voodoo PCI
Permedia 2 PCI

(lazy bones )

@A4000_Mad

Wow, isn't actually that bad!

Looks fairly good... For AGA!

How fast are window-draws etc... is it laggy to move windows etc... or does it just default to the "windows are redrawn when youve stopped moving them" like on OS3.x?

Anyway, looks nice... for AGA! :-) :-D

I'm a student... go figure  :-)

I wish I could afford a PPC card let alone a Cybervision, anything is possible but ££ is always the main limiter for me...  :-)
