AROS ... How far is it ?

How far is AROS ? ... Do I have to uninstall it every time there is a new update, and install the new one, or can it be updated directly now ? Would install it as soon as it is possible to update it ... Im to lazy to uninstall all the time :-)

Does it have a web browser now ?

I think aros is the future of amiga.Amiga os 4.0 would need a miracle to survive.Developers would have to code for it,-(by the which compiler produces executables for amiga os 4.0?Could the gcc under linux produce executables for it ?)-

For me any operating system that has no support for a decent browser is no good.I wonder if mozilla could be ported to it.

Hardware for Amiga os 4.0 is the trusty old A1 a computer that reaches for more than 800 euros on ebay or the old ppc boards of phase 5 that cost too much for only a 233 mhz machine.

Amiga inc is the same bullsh*t company we know.While Hyperion manages to bring amiga os 4.0 to people,amiga inc is simply porting old amiga favorite games to pocket pc platform and does not care to find a suitable solution for new amiga hardware (check their site,it's the most awful site)

Now i have never tested this on a mac that my friend has but there is a good opportunity it could run in linux and wine.

Check out the status of AROS on the official web site (www.aros.org), the official community site (www.aros-exec.org), and the unofficial community portal (www.arosworld.org).

IMO AROS has reached a good usable status. A web browser (Traveller) is in  active development  and a first release should be available in the 1Q 2008.

There is a new Live CD distro in development called "Velocity" which will be available for download sometime this month. A preconfigured and packaged VMWare image (VwmAROS) is already available for download at http://vmwaros.org/.

There is a way to upgrade older installation with new nightly builds but I never really had success. I was told in a forum from the developers that all I need to do was to copy over the files from cd to hdd.

Try it out on Virtual PC for MAC. Worst it can happen is that it won't start and you've made a coaster if you burned a CD.

There is AmiGG as a messenger program and WookieChat is also available for AROS.

I could go on and on but most of the information is available on the sites I posted above. Another good site to visit is http://arosshow.blogspot.com

There is now also an online shop where you can buy gifts with the AROS logo on it and money collected from those sales will be donated to AROS development. The link is available from www.arosworld.org. 2 videos are also viewable on youtube about aros. Quality is not the greatest but they show aros in action. Those are available on the same site.

I'm really excited about AROS. It is one of the best ideas I've seen in the Amiga comunity lately. It is such a great work also. If you compare the time A Inc spent to have OS4 from the OS3 sources, and the time that AROS took to be written from scratch by users, not companies, it is VERY impressive.

I would like to have a stable version of it. The last one I've downloaded crashes very often, but I understand it is still under development, and It will work fine one day

My home PC runs it nice, but It doesn't work with the Dell Dimension I use at my job. My computer has a PCChips mobo and a Semprom 2200+

One of the things I really like in Aros is that like the Amiga, it boots fast, and you don't need to turn it off like Windows and Linux. Just push tha button and say goodbye

I downloaded and burn the live cd iso today. Booted on a old pc that barley runs xp and its very sexeh and fast indeed. I think aros is wicked and I cannot wait till I have the time to fiddle a bit more with it. Mabye even install it on a pc.

Ignore the troll and immediately download and burn (if you don't want to was a CD, you can use a re-writable, but I don't think the CD will be a waste, I'm sure you'll show it off to your friends if you keep the CD) the bootable CD ISO. Takes a few minutes and you can check it out. Very easy - you've got nothing to lose or worry about. It has worked fantastically so far for me (no crashes like others have mentioned - not unless I did weird and complicated stuff anyhow). And browser is on the way...

I totally agree with the cat eye as Logo; simple and it has a good vibe with credibility.

With AROS, what's to complain about?  While it may not yet host a usable browser and have all the features & apps we take for granted in 2007, neither does any other Amiga/Amiga-like OS.

If you like AmigaOS and want a modern Amiga-like OS with real potential, (free of the IP holders' political wrangling),  running on a variety of cheap old->new hardware, and it's free!

Keep up the good work fellas, well done!

I second Coldfish's statements.

I also thought the same about the logo (when I first saw it), although even a non-eye logo would be interesting to see as well. I just think the "furry" stuff is a bit of too niche-y or esoteric and possibly a "turn off" for some (although I can see a sort of "rhyme" with Tux and "beastie" of BSD...). Anyways, no big deal. The essence is more important :-)
