First post! (and i know some of it might be in the wrong place!)
« on: December 07, 2007, 01:46:43 AM »
So.. how are you guys doing?!

It hard to tell from what i read sometimes..

Anyway, i'll start with the basics.. Like many of you here (i'm fairly sure), I have joined .org because i have returned cap in hand to the world of amiga.. so i've got me an a1200, always wanted one after my a500's :)

Something started tweaking in me, distant memories, fractured.. yet in those fleeting images was a lucidity, a certain vivid remembrance of how things used to be. Call it nostalgia maybe, a misguided belief like the kind a motor enthusiast has when talking about a hilman imp, but i had a yearning to go back to an earlier, simpler time, when there seemed to be some form of cameraderie, when using a computer was actually fun.

All those lost days and nights, sat in front of a wedge of plastic..

I knew nothing, but i'd tinker, and things would happen! Imagine that, little me pushed buttons, and stuff actually happened and i felt engaged.

so i've come back for that.. i thought surely now that all that kit is old, i can tinker with near impunity, if it dies then there is more kit available out there that people don't want.. And at the same time i saw that there seemed to be a large group of peeps who still held high esteem for the old girl.. people still doing things, amazing things.

BUT. On closer inspection, there seems to be a worrying trend.. It hasn't permeated entirely, but theres a bitterness i don't remember.. Instead of people building each other up, keeping things going.. there seems to be a snide atmosphere at times. people ask a question, some will help but a disturbingly large element seem to want to put people down.

Like a child who's found the largest chocolate egg and worked out how to get it out of the wrapper, and would rather keep it to themselves until it has all gone..

In a situation where to be honest, this platform is hanging on by a thread, i cannot see the point in breaking people down and pushing them away, when really the amiga scene needs to keep peeps in, welcome, interested and educated.

I'm hoping this place is better than most  :-)

I'm gonna need your help at time peeps, just a pointer to where the stuff has already been posted and the like.. I want to mod these boxes of mine like i never could when i was younger.. 'cos i couldn't afford to break 'em :D

And i could never afford the bits anyway..

So first question is naturally about interesting mods for the twelve.. Flashrom might be nice?

Even on the schematics there's a section on it, is it case of classic commodore 'optional'?

Welcome to a.org :pint:

Yup, plenty of negativity here, but there are also plenty of people who are willing to help when they can, you just have to filter out the cr@p. Enjoy your stay :-)

We are hanging in here J_Biscuit. I guess you must be in the UK with the Hillman Imp reference, and that would also allow us to make assumptions as to your age
As for mods to the A1200, what do you want to use it for ? If its purely nostalgia and games then your path to enlightenment is smooth

I haven't even posted, yet.

I'm a newbie 2.

Don't worry, I've had a long love affair with the Miggies 2.

And I get the Hillham Imp reference aswell. I guess I'm showing my age 2. Blah!

I need to get back on the hourse, just like yourself.

Luck.

SO, some1's online, where should I put my foot in to get back on the horse.

I've got a 'collection' my A1200 + '30 + 128mb seems like the best shot.

Also have a collection on 600's a 5 and a cd32.

I'm and old skool 'hacker' (nothing to do with attacking computers) I have a Unix background (remember, it was before Linus) and learned to code on SASC 6.

I could write drivers, if I ever bothered to learn about the Miggies API's.

WADDAYATHINK ?!

PS. I still have a ROM kernel manual n other dev stuff.

unfortually A.org suffers from the odd half baked idiot, but unlike other sites the staff here are great and 90% of members are helpful! But as Adz said if you can filter out the crap and ignore these idiots you will enjoy the site :-)

Well.. i'd already replied but in classic style it took me so long to finish the post i had timed out and in the process of logging in i managed to lose the lot!

So this time i'm afraid you get the readers' digest version..ish.

First up thanks for the replies, got such a warm feeling inside so i have, inside.. not down south so don't worry.. :-o

Homer.. yup, UK.. Good assumption, not so good is anything to do with my age, just because i know what a hilman imp is doesn't mean i'm that old a boy. I'm just a nipper really, aw {bleep}.. just remembered i've hit my thirties.

Agafaster, i'm in worcestershire (that's as close as i'll get for now i tink), but i was born in the fine city of Wolves as it happens. Civic hall et al, rules forever :)

What do i want to do with my amiga's??

Well i'm starting up again, really from the very bottom, as i can't remember a bloody thing. It gets like that if i don't use some knowledge every day and it's been ten years at least..

I want to add functionality to the 12, and learn by doing it.. I know people have done many things with them, and i want to do the same things.

I'd like to have the KS on a flashrom.. add the hd as i have two 2.5 60GB Hitachi's going spare (i know about the upper limit on size, but there is a fix?)

Usb and internal cd/dvd rom would be nice (i have many bits spare from laptops!)

Memory naturally, networking (PCMCIA i guess is the best route)

It's all hardware tinkering i guess.. POINTERS GLADLY ACCEPTED!

I think the amiga os still has something to offer, If only all the bull that keeps going on with who owns what and such, maybe things would be a lot better.

If only it was open source, or if peeps in ownership actually did something with what they've got, instead of sitting on their arses waiting until someone else does something, then taking them to court demanding money.

Porting AOS to mac hardware would be a good thing..

What's this morph os? sounds like someone did a great thing, but somehow it looks like peeps have smashed down the people concerned, purely because it's not amiga os.. I say WTF?

Well. i'm just starting the long journey back, who knows what i'll do and where i go.. Maybe one day i'll produce something useful.. for someone who's still interested..

we'll see.

well believe it or not some people can only beat superfrog 100 times before they turn bored and negative me I'm going for 101.

edit: I think its the lack of progress that brings up some negativity and the fractured state of the community.  Surprisingly though ask a question about a mac or windows or Linux where things are still fresh and new and you will get a flood of positive answers.  I always found this community to be the most helpful in solving non-amiga problems oh the irony or maybe its just the community has a good foundation to understand new technology.
Couldn\\\'t afford an amiga then can\\\'t afford one now.

Agafaster> I'm in March, Cambs (famous for the escaping IRA dudes from HMP Whitemoor, in 1994).

It's flat out here and global warming/rising sea level is a bit worrying. I have a swamp out the back that is at sea level!!!
