A1200 PINK Screen on bootup : Hep me!
« on: November 27, 2007, 06:34:16 PM »
This is a plain A1200 and I have plugged in an Amiga 500 Power Supply. I removed the keyboard and the disk drive and only have the comp out going to a TV and PS plugged in. When I turn it on I get the screen asking for the boot disk but the background is PINK. I plugged in a mouse and can go into the boot up options but it is difficult to read due to the PINK Color.

I pulled and reseated the ROMS. Still the same. When I go into the bootup options the screen goes to grey but it is very difficult to read the text. The boxes are wanky and the text looks like it is spotty.

Anyone know why this is? I just got this A1200 from someone and it sat in storage for a long time...

After looking around I am guessing this means the floppy drive is dead or my power or floppy drive connections on the Mobo are bad... So I guess I need another internal floppy to test. Is there any other way to test the floppy ir the computer with another FDD?

I have an A500 can I use that one?

A500 floppy won't physically fit (IIRC) but will be fine for test. The poor colors and blurry text can probably be attributed to the composite output -- it's terrible. Using a shielded cable specifically for video might help a little.

Naturally, the video output could be broken, but I'd try a better cable and another screen before condemning it (best would be to try the RGB output).

When I plugged in to test the A500 I bought off someone here it had garbage lines running down the hand/disk 1.2 screen. Anyone knows what that means?

It also would read the 1.2 disks supplied but it should allow me to test the A1200 anyway...

Sounds like a video problem... (The "RCA" video out on the A500 is monochrome, and also not very good.)

The test was positive with the A500 Drive. The original A1200 drive is shot. So, if someone sees my WTB post for an A1200 drive please PM me!

Thanks!

I just whacked my A1200 Internal FDD a couple of times and now IT WORKS! Go figure. I should probably get a new one anyway... I love working on old hardware!

You can take those drives apart, clean and lubricate where appropriate and it will probably be fine. There's also a tool on aminet for calibrating them (by matching an audio pitch, IIRC), though it's kind of a delicate job.
