A4000 IDE problems
« on: November 25, 2007, 10:30:16 PM »
I have experienced following problems with my A4000, which I assume are related to the internal IDE controller. Problems seem to appear after installing a new CD drive.

1. Few seconds after switching on my A4000 I get the boot screen. The attached HD is not recognized. All what I can do is to boot from a floppy and if I run the HDtoolboox it finds no HDs. Most of the time the orange HD LED is on...
2. If I switch on and boot with no HD attached the HD LED is still on most of the time.
3. From time to time Amiga boots normally and also works without any problems.
4. I was also trying to boot from another IDE controller on Zorro bus. Few times it was successful, but most of time nothing happened at all.
5. I did try different combinations of cables and HD drives, but with no success.

Does anybody have any idea what may be the problem?

If it is possible to fix it, can you recommend a service (in Europe), where I could send my A4000 main board for repair.

Can you confirm how the devices are cabled and jumpered?

There is a single HD attached to IDE now, jumpered in single mode.

Cables or jumpres are probably not the problem since the very same configuration works well from time to time.

My guess (I am not an expert though) is that maybe while installing the new CD drive some kind of short cut has happened... which now prevents the IDE to work properly. But for some reason it works normally from time to time.

I presume your CD and HDD are on the same IDE bus?  If so you should set your HDD to master and your CD drive to slave.  That should solve your problem? Anyway best of luck.
