Video slot for A1200??
« on: July 15, 2003, 07:06:29 AM »
Does anybody know of a bus expander that would allow you to get a video slot out of an A1200?

A friend of mine is trying to get a toaster/flyer setup, but he's only got an A1200, and doesn't want to have to buy another Amiga if it can be avoided.

Okay, so I got off my lazy butt and started really looking and I've noticed that several zorro expanders for the A1200 include an inline AGA video slot.

So does anybody know if any of these are fully compatible or know of any issues in getting one to work work with a Video Toaster 4000?

I know that RBM made A1200 zorro busboards that
would accept the Toaster; RBM also made the
best 1200 towers IMO. Unfortunately their
products seem to be nonexistant these days.

There was one thing, Eyetech used to sell it. bit of a hack (although I'm sure it was a well tested hack !) as it clipped over the top of the Gayle (IIRC) chip on the A1200 mobo by cunning use of a PLCC socket.

(which would probably preclude use of a fast IDE board)

bit dodgy, you have to watch for physical stability and firmness of connection, and then you need to watch that Gayle doesnt overheat. however, I seem to remember reports that it did work quite well. anyone ?

Excuse my ignorance, but what signals did the Video slot provide?

@bloodline
   I'm not sure exactly how detailed of an answer you're looking for so, here's a general wash...

The Amiga 2000, 3000, and 4000 all had an internal video slot that a card could use to intercept the video signal and manipulate it.  This is how we get Amiga only graphics cards, and scan-doublers, and the like without needing external hardware on those machines.

the A1200 of course doesn't have any of those expansion slots on it, and therefore needs the expansion bus extended out to give it Zorro-II slots and (sometimes) a video slot.

you can find a pinout listing of the A4000 video slot here
