Apply quantum mechanics to the universe?

Forget about global warming!

Yeah I saw that on Slashdot, pretty crazy if you ask me, but it may be true I suppose.

This is another interesting Universe related page from the Telegraph website:
Is this the fabric of the universe?

when you get into m-theory, multiple universes, etc. etc. you are far from empirical science and begin to use circular logic and nubulous hypothesis based on nebulous hypothesis. you can come up with some pretty strange ideas to explain your stand. 32 dimensions etc.

it is possible to mathematically prove imaginary theories and have them look plausible even if they are based on nothing. much of the academic world is based on getting published (and getting a grant) your work doesnt really need to lead anywhere. controversial stuff can get you published. and since they are arguing imagination a persuasive argument can get you pretty far.
Oh yeah?!?

Doesn't the Schrodinger problem only occur on the quantum scale... you can't apply it to something as large as the universe... surely...

@Bloodline
Their theory is the universe is being destroyed by observations of dark energy made through a telescope. The mass of the universe is estimated between 10^53 kg and 10^60 kg.

@Henry
A Grand Unified Theory based on E8 Lie algebra at least makes predictions that can be verified empirically. The current String Theory has a huge number of equally possible solutions and can not be verified.

From what I read up to now the
Unified Quantum Field Theory of Burkhard Heim is relly thrilling and provides new concepts.

Really promising, if you ask me...

@cecilia

Yes, but the quilt would be made entirely of time and only exist after you looked at it.

 :-D

@Bloodline
The truth is we don't know.  We don't really understand probability all that well (where these multi-dimensional theories and the like come from in essence), and the level where the microscopic turns macroscopic and we start seeing classical physics instead of quantum physics is looking blurrier all the time.

Yes, that's why the E8 theory looks promising.

As for the whole Schrodinger's cat thing, my limited understanding of quantum mechanics leads me to believe particles on the quantum level only seem to exist in a number of states because we cannot accurately observe them. When we try to observe the particles we change their state (location, energy, etc...). Without knowing the effects we are having on measurement we will not know the true state of the particle before measurement.

My completely un-Scientific theory for multiple states (that I only just dreamt up) is that particles on the quantum level actually exist in other dimensions, and through observation we are peering into these dimensions and making the particles 'real' to us. Just a thought.

Hum,
yeah, most string theorists  already thought that the E8 x E8` gauge group / Heterotic string would be able to  describe  all the particles and forces that we see (this is the simplest model to include all the  forces including gravity and  known particles).
The real discovery is the `pattern` that emerged that  seems to  describe groups or families    of certain   particles  and related forces. The difficult part was that `pattern` is best viewed in 8 dimensional space so it wasn't  easy to first see  that structure.  But  now that it is found we an make  predictions how  certain particles are related to other known/unknown particles.

No idea why that isn't working.
