recommended replacement for BPPC ppc-heatsink
« on: November 22, 2007, 09:50:21 AM »
I was there thinking that the original Phase5 black heatsink on the ppc is just too crap. Why? Without the metal plate fix (a small flat piece of metal under the heatsink) it's not cooling the ppc too well (not making proper contact). So, i thought: let's remove the original black heatsink and add your own solution. But what kind of solution would work and cool the poor ppc nicely? How to attach one on the ppc? Here is a picture i found of the ppc without any heatsink.

Any cool thoughts please, am i making any sense here :-)?

This is something that I'm interested in as well as I need to do it to get a BPPC that I bought working again. I was planning on using old PC heatsinks that I have but hadn't yet addressed attaching them securely.

Standard thermal paste should work just fine for ensuring good heat transfer and contact though.

Low-profile heatsinks coming from dead pc northbridge off-board motherboards are a good choice. They are the right shape and dimensions.

Put it with a patch of thermaltake (3M heat auto-glue pads) and put the original cap over and you are in business again.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Enzotech makes a really nice low-profile copper sink, the CNB-SL1. I dunno how hot those PPC chips get, but a copper sink with a low-noise fan might be enough.

If going totally crazy, one could get the latest (and fastest) revision of BOTH 68060 & PPC chips, getting the old ones off and soldering them newer ones in place :-D. But where to find these chips and how much the cost??? I'd like to tune my BPPC to the max :-P !

where can you get that ultra low profile Cooler Master fan for '040?
If ppc or '040 get too hot, will A1200 freeze as some kind of warning, or the card just dies?
Better sorry than worry.

Dont replace the black heatsink, just remove it and apply artic silver, then place low profile heatsinks with fans on top of the original black heatsink.

Is the little fan on the board necessary? It's making a loud noise! I got also a huge 120mm blowing right to the PPC anyway.
I could save Aeon, but she will not come. Who will save me?
