Keyboard stickers?
« on: November 19, 2007, 08:45:03 PM »
This is one for anyone who has painted an A1200. I want some of the keyboard stickers which you stick on once the A1200 keyboard has been painted. I need them to be transparent not black, since I'm thinking of painting an A1200 a colour other than black.

TIA

@motorollin

Why not buy some sticky back transparancy and print your own with an ink-jet.

@ Rob

 That`s not a bad idea! wish I`d thought of that. Maybe put some clear-coat over the top to protect them.

@Dr.Bongo
Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, I can't find any transparent ones in his eBay shop.

@Rob
I don't know why I didn't think of that :-) Will have a go if I can't find any pre-made. Thanks!

@motorollin

 I didn`t look at the entire shop either, but maybe it`s worth mailing the guy and asking?

Just a thought.

Will do. Thanks very much for finding the store for me - I really appreciate it! If I find anything which may be of help to others I'll post it.

@ Motorollin

When I created a 1/48 scale B-17 for my father, I used transparent decal sheets to duplicate the name of the plane and the squadron symbols for the plane. I printed them on an ink-jet printer and then water-sealed them to the plane. The sheets were both white and transparent.

If you think they might be useful, let me know, and I'll pass the info regarding the sheets I used on to you.

Thanks Ed. If you can print on to them using a standard inkjet printer, then please do pass the details on.

Thanks!

No problem, Moto. The paper I used was supplied from this site: http://www.mcgpaper.com/ , specifically this paper: Ink Jet Water Slide Decal Paper. These guys are located here in the states, but I know a guy in the Netherlands that has done a B-17 project similar to mine, so I'm pretty sure you can find some closer to home. Just do an Internet search using the words from the second link, above.

All that said, I'm going to mention some of the issues I had using these sheets, just FYI.

I ordered the "Try It Kit" which only includes four sheets of paper. I used a mixed kit (transparent and white) because I needed both, so I had to be careful to get it right the first time. I suspect for your purposes, four sheets of transparent should be more than enough.

You print the sheets on an ink jet, but you also have to treat them afterwards so that the water doesn't wash the ink of the paper when you go to apply them. For my purposes, I had to cut the decals close to the ink and this caused some "bleeding" of the ink when I wet them. The decals are also rather thick. When looking at my model, you can actually see the edges where I cut them. They also cracked, ever so slightly, so, once again, if you look closely, you could see tiny little silver veins shooting through the decal. For your purposes, I would suggest cutting the paper to fit the key, rather than close to the ink, as I did. This might be a bit of work, however.

I think I would also suggest that you not, necessarily, try just the McGonigal paper. You might try various brands as some may not be as thick as the paper I used, and, therefore, may not have all the issues I described.

Let me know if I can help any further.

Thanks so much for all the info Ed, and for the links. Once I've decided exactly what I'm going to do I'll place an order. I'm undecided whether I want to get an A1200 and build a slimline CD-ROM in to it and spray it, or spray my C64 and Prophet64 cartridge.
