Preconfigured Workbench?
« on: July 14, 2003, 12:45:59 PM »
I recently started using my old 1200/030 with 16 MB Ram and I could really use some help from you guys.

Back then, when I had the time I had created a really attractive Workbench, with all the tools needed for my daily tasks. I had that in a cd, and whenever I needed it I could restore it simply by copying it.

Now, I have bought workbench 3.9, and it is really a pain in the a** trying to set this up again. Is there any kind of "preconfigured" Workbench  I can download and use? It would really save me time and help me get to using my miggy again! I don't care if it is a 3.9 workbench, I can update it with my cd! A 3.0 or 3.1 Workbench would do. Any useful links?

Thanx in advance!

PS: I thought of AIAB but it is also outdated and a bit heavy for my config I suppose. :-D

AIAB is not really a good starting point. It is rather a good ending point. AIAB has totally messed up the original Workbench setup. It is a pain to add something to it.

bon, I don't really understand what you mean by a preconfigured Workbench. You say you have your preferred configuration on CD. Now I would assume that you need a simple OS3.9 installation so you can add programs from your CD. Or you restore the setup from your CD and install OS3.9 on top of it. Now what is a preconfigured Workbench in your opinion ? Do you mean the OS3.9 installation without any additional features ? You get this by just running the installation script, where is the problem ? I don't see the pain you are talking about  :-?

Bye,
Thomas

My preferred configuration I have in backup is 5 years old! I would like something similar, with up to date software. That's what I need! Any help?

I haven't got OS3.9 myself, but wasn't one of the key selling points the way it's all fairly pre-configured - no need to install  newicons, a dock, classact, a media player, a CD player etc... ?

Why don't you simply install OS3.9 over your old configuration? It works :-) simply select "update"

I use AOS 3.9 and Dopus Megallen 2 which is my ideal WB setup.

There are loads of addons you could install:
MUI 3.8 + plugins, Virex, KingCon (or use one supplie d with OS3.9), latest datatypes, BlitzBasic (now free),

bon :

I am with you on this. Ok i use a draco for most of my work. I decided to purchase OS 3.9 to make things better and to my surprise, the amiga OS had never been somthing so stupid to use.

After about 10 or so reinstallations and formating of harddisks i decided to go back to OS 3.1. That worked perfect until about a year or so when i had finished edittng a couple of important documentaries. I thought it was the right time to re try the OS 3.9 or else my money would have been a complete waste.

I searched for trouble shootings and found out that some one had configured a workbench 3.9 to work on the draco. I contacted him and he informed of how much it will cost. I seatled him and he send me the cd rom with all the mojos on.

All i had to do, was to insert his cd rom in and follow the instructions. All went fine until i had to remove some of the features that i find unneccesary. F.eg the background in a window is filled with some wierd silva sky image, i could hardly read the text.

This is where my disapointment begun. I follw the way one has to do it as it always has been and it just dos'nt work. There are also so many patches added that you don't know which belongs to which.

The worst of it all is, there is no documentation of those haks and patches. As i use the machine mainly for serious work, i don't have time to fidle with such rubbish which is non productive. I even run the risk of doing something stupid which will force me to format the harddrives. The least is somthing i realy don't hope .

At the moment, if have to read somthing from the diskette, as i often do due to transferring of data from pc to draco. Exspecialy if i rendered images from lightwave on the pc. I will have to insert the diskette in the drive then reboot before it will be readable. This was not the case pre Os 3.9.  Imagine rebooting 720 times to load 720 frames of iff images to do acommecial of 30 seconds.

So, now do i have to consider that i upgraded my system or made it worse.

                            Your's Faithfully

It really sounds like OS3.9 is NOT the cause of your grief, seriously.

Do you know what hacks and patches you're running?
Basically, they are either started from the scripts
s:user-startup
s:startup-sequence

or from the directory
sys:wbstartup

A default OS3.9 doesn't have anything much here, except
rawinfo, classact (I think?) and amidock

If changing prefs with the prefs program doesn't work, I suspect you're not using the default iprefs program, check for this in s:startup-sequence.
