Help! My A1200 is dying
« on: July 14, 2003, 11:57:23 AM »
Hi,

this is my first post here and sadly enough it's a bad one. My (backup) Amiga 1200 is dying!
Yesterday, when i tried to power it up it froze after a few seconds. That happend again every time i switched the power on. so I tried a different PSU, but nothing changed. So I disconnected everything (apollo 1240, hard disk, floppy,  the keyboard, I even took it out of the case (desktop case) but nothing changed.
Now, when i try to boot up the following happens:
1. Power LED on
2. I see the 'insert disk' picture
3. after about 2 seconds the picture freezes + LED flashes
4. Guru (so short that I cannot read it)
5. Black screen

after powering of, waiting some seconds and powering on again the same happens.  :-x  :-x

It's revision 1.d1

I have another 1200 board before this one that died showing only a green picture. (bad chip ram i think) so that would be the 2nd one that dies :-x

If it doesn't work with just the bare motherboard, try changing the power supply. It may be that that is faulty. If not, just get another A1200 on eBay. I just bought one for £20, with a bunch of games :-D

if there are any chips in sockets, press them down. you might hear a "cracking" sound by this, but that´s normal.

this helped my a4000 :-)

ulf ..as in ulf from norway in telemark?? ..

anyway remove your accelerator, does it work then?.
or maybe an fastata? ...

sounds like you have been running on low power for a while, remeber that the a1200 orginal psu aint enough ....and will eventually die or kill the motherboard.... ;(

the orginal a500 psu's are better , i would recomend thoose , but i would also recomend u to just use an pc at/atx psu.... instead...

cheers
Whats up with all the hate!

I tried it with 2 two different PSUs, no difference.
You're right I'll try to get a new one.

It's just bad that there is no way to fix it.

thanks anyway

b.t.w. Xeron, I like your Real Pong game   :-D

@lempkee

No, it's ulf from germany  :-)

Yes I removed everything. The only thing that was connected was LED, Monitor and PSU. It might really have been running on low power (a1200 psu) for too long.
I also tried to push the kick roms a little futher down into the socket, I'm afraid there is not much more that might have get loose because everything else is soldered.
I think there's not much i can do about it anymore.
except  :-x

Thank you anyway!
Luckly, It's the backup und not my main Amiga  :-)

Have you tryed booting from a bootable floppy disk or without S-S? (if yours is an A1200HD)

Ciao
