installing a cd rw for my amiga 1200
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:43:33 PM »
Dear Friends:

AmigaKit has an affordable cd rw/ide + buffered interface(or whatever it is)for my amiga 1200. Is it hard to install? I notice that unlike squirrel-pcmcia this has to be hooked to the internal part of a1200. Is it hard to install?  Can you tell me about it?
thanks!!!
I am really interested in getting a cd rw for my amiga.

I didn't see any CDRW on their site that would fit inside an A1200, are you going to run it external?  I have purchased the same 4way buffered IDE for my A1200, but have not installed it yet (another project waiting to be completed).  It has a step by step installation document with only 7 steps so it can't be too complicated (I think the first and last steps are "open the case" and "close your A1200 case")

I was thinking of installing a spare Mac PowerBook DVD+RW SuperDrive inside my A1200 and connected to the AmigaKit 4way buffered IDE interface.  Has anyone had any experience installing and/or using such a DVD+RW SuperDrive, or any other DVD+RW drives inside or connected to an A1200?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

No hes on about the 4-way buffered IDE Splitter that needs IDEFIX software.

It has 1X 2.5"IDE master and 2x 3.5" IDE master/slave.

These are really good and I have used one myself and Amigakits price for such an item is great!

all you need then is a slim laptop cd-rw drive and a slim cd-IDE PCB adpater that fit on to the back of the cd-rw and then cable to the 4-way Buffered IDE splitter.

I have actually done this with great success and had OS3.9 working perfect.

Forget the slimline cd drive if you dont want too Cut your case . You can rute a cable out the pcmcia port or the scsi trapdor behind the amiga ... The worst is getting power for the thing i would use a power adapter meant for a usb - ide box.. Installing the ide splitter i strait forward and easy just follow the instructions ... But finding a good way to rute the cable externally is not always easy and require some thought ...

Try to get a kit like this HERE use the power thing and just put the usb away somwere ,,, You can even custom make a exsternal cd case just cut a hole in it .. Try to get a long ide cable to this though---...

As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong guys) but IDE on the miggy is pretty slow and writing CDs maybe fairly limited, scsi being a lot faster. Possibly the technology for preventing buffer under/over runs on some CD-RW would help here?

Just a thought, but maybe something to be aware of if you're wanting to burn CD's.

Amiga's own IDE is slow. But it can burn a CD. Set the transfer to a maximum of 2x (with a 030/50MHz CPU or better).
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
