Amiga 1200 audio problem
« on: November 12, 2007, 12:12:19 AM »
My Amiga 1200 (been with me since new in 1993) has suddenly developed an audio problem. The sound is low and distorted from both channels. It's the same with two different Bigfoot power supplies, with different sets of powered speakers and with the speaker inside a 1080 monitor.

Any idea what has happened? i have looked closely at the motherboard, but I can't discern a problem by visual inspection.

I fear I'll be needed a new motherboard (hello, Amigakit!). I just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before I go that route.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Have you tried running a program that turns off the filter and plays back sound through the Paula chip?  It may just be a bad resistor (or capacitor) in the filter circuit.

A very good suggestion -- and one I had not thought of. Unfortunately, it didn't have a good result. The audio is still very low and distorted with or without the filter. I used a little program from Aminet called LED to toggle the audio filter.

Thanks for your help.

I've fairly well flogged the subject to death in this article.

My repair charge rates for such a job would be approx US$50-$60 which includes all parts, labour, full testing and economy air freight from NZ to US.  About 5 days turnaround time at the moment.  Email me if you'd like more info.

Audio problems are commonly caused by the two electrolytic capacitors.

They are the two seating near audio RCA jacks, both 22uF x 35V (or above). Prefer to use non-polarized units in there.

The code of the caps are C324 (leftmost left RCA jack) and C334 (rightmost right RCA jack).
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
