If you pass the -u parameter then it unlocks it. If you pass -a then it activates it. Simply passing the -j parameter just jailbreaks it and puts Installer.app on for you. It will not affect the baseband or unlock it.

Remember - my iPhone is locked to O2 the same as yours. I have not unlocked it, nor have I had any need to modify the baseband. I can confirm everything still works 100% after this process.

Also, the only changes this makes are in firmware. If it gets b0rked or you change your mind and want to go back, just do a restore in iTunes and it will go back to factory - i.e. no Jailbreak any more.

Well... I guess tonight is the night then! Oh... I'm a little nervous, it is my first time afterall...

What about the iPhone backups... I assume all the personal stuff, sms call lists etc... are saved?

Yes, everything will be exactly as it was before the Jailbreak. You won't lose anything.

Don't be too nervous - the first time is always the hardest. It will be over before you know it. In fact you'll probably wish it wasn't over so quickly, and you might even want to do it again. You'll definitely wonder why you waited so long. Hang on, what are we talking about? :-P

Once your iPhone is jailb0rked, you will have a new application on your Home screen called Installer. Just run that (best to be connected to WiFi) and you will be presented with a nice little package manager which will download, install, update and uninstall software for you. I would recommend:

BSD Subsystem (required for some other apps)
AFPd 0.3 (Apple Filesharing Protocol server - your iPhone will be browseable through the Finder :-D )
OpenSSH (SSH server - this will let you share your Edge connection with your laptop)
Taskbar Notifier (very nice app which puts an icon on the taskbar where your battery icon is when you have SMS, email, voicemail etc. Much easier to see if you have any messages this way!)

You kind of wear the Iphone, not use it, its more of a fashion statment than a usable device. So it should sell very well, as there a lot of fashion victims out there more than willing to throw their cash away.

Once u get past the fancy jerky spinny menu thing, the Iphone is way past its sell by date. I mean come on, a 2MP camera!, they were around on phones like 4 years ago.

Yeah, anybody who claims to be a techie salivates at the mention of iphone.  Windows mobile devices do pretty much the same thing but in complete absence of a sense of style.

I debated getting an iphone, but eventually just bought a motorola A780 off Ebay.  It's Linux, does most of what iphone does, the camera is a little skimpy at 1.3 MP and you have to stick a card into it to have room for mp3s, but it was 100 US dollars and all I had to do was transfer my SIM card...

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

Now I've got a Terminal installed on my iPhone... it really is having an on-line unix box in my pocket!!! That is brilliant from my point of view!

Now I have a jail broken iPhone, I would agree with you... except the iPhone has an extra feature of "it just works"... my Old WindowCE PocketPC was contantly crashing and getting it to do stuff was a struggle... trying to run 3rd party apps, etc... it was not a joy to use (Though I still miss it, as it ran UAE rather well)...

I've not tried a Linux based mobile device, I expect that they have similar advantages over WinCE devices in that regard.

That ain't nice you coming here picking on bloodline's gadget with your first post. He gets the crazy idea that you are picking on him. Now if you apologise, like I know you're going to, I'll tell him to forget the whole thing :quickdraw:

Yeah sorry for giving my opinion on the Iphone.  I got it all wrong they are a really useable and powerful mobile device, packed with technology, and not a piece of catalogue boy’s jewellery at all.

See, it didn't take long for you to see the light! That, my friend, is the power of Apple's marketing machine.

-Edit- Is catalogue boy a complement?
