« on: November 07, 2007, 09:34:27 AM »
I am thinking about purchasing a LCD monitor to use with my new DCE flicker fixer. Is there anything important I should consder when choosing?

I've read somewhere that a double screen resolution has the best effect (1280x1024 is twice 640x512), but I haven't tried it yet.

If you run PAL make sure the monitor can accept as low as 50hz If not it may show out of range when turn it on --

Try to get a 4:3 one for the best value & quality per pixel.

Get a widescreen one and you'll have half the monitor as black borders, and the scaling may blur the image.

Make sure the Vertical Refresh Rate can sync to 50Hz. This is very important. 56Hz is not close enough and will NOT work.

Thanx for the advice guys. I thought I would try my 19" Samsung LCD anyway but lowest vertical sync is 56Hz and got a 'intermittent' picture. After a quick check of Aussie Ebay, it seems all available LCD monitors cannot sync down to 50Hz. Any suggestions for 15" or 17" LCD monitors would be most appreciated..

Viewsonic monitors tend to sync down to 50 Hz. But I still wouldn't recommend an LCD unless you really need the space. It will always look much worse than a CRT.

I've run DblPAL on my 19" AGNeovo F419 (12ms response) - so I guess 50Hz vertical sync is no problem.  It'll also sync down to 24kHz horizontal too.  Might be worth considering.

I found myself a 17" Viewsonic as suggested and it works quite well :-)

However there is vertical banding on the screen, is this normal? If so is there a way to reduce this?

On your monitor there should be an "image setup" button or similar. This should automatically lock the monitor to the amiga's screen size, position, phase and clock.

This works best if you feed the monitor a checkerboard test pattern to lock onto while it's doing the image setup.

So display this image fullscreen on your amiga http://www.techmind.org/lcd/phasing.html, and while it is displayed run the automatic image setup option on your monitor and see if it helps.

Still having trouble with this! How do I display the chekerboard pattern full screen? Would I have this banding problem with a CRT as well?
