Questions regarding the purchase of a new amiga os 4 machine.
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:27:44 PM »
Hello to all amigans out there.I have had an amiga since 1989 an a500.Since 1996 i got an escom amiga 1200.Later got an apollo 68040/40 a hd and ide cd rom.Sadly i stoped using amiga at 2000 when i bought a pc.

However i never left my amiga, and these months i set it up again and i am experimenting to install debian linux 68k.

However i would like to upgrade my machine or buy a new one amiga clone since aga chipset and only 2mbytes of chip ram 16 mbytes of fast ram and 68k proccesors are not good anymore (we live in 2007 and moving on).

My problem rises from the state of amiga scene. The only upgrade cards i can find when i search ebay cost too much.I dont think i would feel good to pay 400+ euros to get a ppc card with a 603 at 233 mhz. It's old and rather rare. And i dont want to buy ppc cards from elbox with mediators cards or g-rex and then not be able to install amiga os 4.

Is there hope for me out there? What are the machines that could run amiga os 4?Efika or pegasos 2 and other machines how much do they cost? Why were the a1 machines abandonded? Is there hope sometime that there would be new production of such machines?

I want to be an active amiga user again but i feel cheated by amiga inc and the way they handle things (no new hardware, legal problems and courts etc). And knowing that there are amiga clones machines that have 800+ mhz proccesors makes me have many second thoughts on the idea to pay 400+ euros to get an old ppc board that is second or third hand.

Now the only option for me is emulation, winuae and aros and of course debian linux 68k to be installed on my amiga 1200.

Sorry if these questions have been answered.I just want to know from people that really know what is happening before i go and buy something amiga related.

Thank you all for your help!
Best regards

There are only 2 ways to run AmigaOS4

1. Buy an AmigaOne. Prices vary but expect to pay at least €500
2. Buy a BlizzardPPC (PPC603e - for Amiga 1200) or CyberstormPPC (PPC604e - for A3000/A4000).

Currently there are no other options. These PPC cards from Elbox have been announced years ago and will very probably never see the light of day.

The only (very small) hope that I have is that the rights to OS4 will go to decent people so that OS4 can be ported to common PPC machines. AFAIK, AmigaOS4 is already running on a Mac Mini so there is still hope in some way. But don't be too eager for that to happen anytime soon.

Yes, it's sad but this is all there is...
