Router with hosts file?

Does anybody know of an ADSL router which contains a (modifiable) hosts file? I'm not scared of telnetting in if necessary.

The reason I ask is that we have a proxy at uni, and it's really annoying having to switch it on when I get there and off when I get home. I would like to add a hosts entry for the proxy server in to our home router, so that when I'm at home the proxy server will resolve to something local - i.e. a proxy service which then just redirects straight out to the wonderweb.

Hi Moto,

I use a Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch 530, which I believe has that capacity. I've not used it, but have read about it in the past.

It's an outdated modem, but their newer models may do what you need. Otherwise, you can pick up an old one, for next to nothing, like I did.

It won't do ADSL 2 though. I think the max speed is 8Mb/s.

If you want to check it out, here is a link to the CLI reference guide for the modem. This is for the Australian version. The UK site doesn't seem to work for me at the moment.

Btw, how's your study going? Do you like going to uni? I don't think I could handle go back.

Wow, that's a blast from the past! T'was my first ever ADSL modem.

Ahhh that would be a problem. I need ADSL2 for my connection. Even so I'll look in to the features of their more recent models.

It's awesome! I love it. After spending such a long time feeling like I'm wasting my life working in IT, it feels so good to be learning something new every day and working towards something I will love to do. I was thinking of posting a thread in the General forum about how I'm getting on, but didn't want to come across as self-absorbed :lol: Thanks for your concern about it though - it's nice that people remember :-)

By the way I though of you the other day when in my Physiology lecture where our discussion digressed to insomnia. Somebody mentioned that getting up an hour early can help you get to sleep at night and can also help to reset your body clock. But I'm sure you've already tried that :-)

Wow, speaking of remembering... That was a long time ago we discussed that one. :-) Just today, I was  seeing a local GP for another matter, and I saw on his card, 'diploma of hynotherapy', and I thought of your previous suggestion regarding insomnia.  Heh. Synchronicity? :crazy:

Yeah, I learned during my brief foray in to Psychology that hypnotherapy can be helpful for insomnia. Unfortunately that's all the advice I can offer there, since my psych degree was a total disaster :lol: But if you ever end up a gibbering wreck unable to communicate due to lack of sleep, then I might be able to help once I'm a qualified SLT ;-)

By the way I've had a better idea regarding the proxy situation. I've discovered that the uni proxy server address does not resolve at home, so I guess the host is on their LAN somewhere and not exposed to the outside world. I can use that to my advantage I think. If I set up a host on my home network with the same name as the proxy server, then it should resolve to the device on my network when I'm at home, and the actual proxy server when I'm at uni

How I actually achieve this is a different matter. I suppose I need to set up a DNS server containing that hostname which then directs to a "real" DNS server for other hostnames :-?

I'm running internal proxies at five different sites and a basic router at home. With my MacBook I simply set up a location profile for each site and for Firefox I use a little plugin called SwitchProxy. Works a treat for me and is much simpler than setting up a virtual proxy and DNS server at home.
