Classic WB Install on a Real A1200
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:20:09 PM »
Has anyone done a Classic WB install on a real Amiga 1200? I heard that this delivers a pre-configured A1200 WB3.1 environment with the most popular tools pre-installed on a clean OS. Has anyone installed Classic WB on a real A1200? Is it an easy install? Can someone give a step by step of how to install on a real A1200? I have a set of original 3.0 and 3.1 Workbench disks. Thanks.

I installed classic on to a standard 1200 recently. I followed the instructions on the bloodwych site.

Installed into winuae using the hdf file and some workbench adf's.

Then zipped up the contents and made the boot floppy as said on the site.

Then copied the zip over using pcmcia cf adapter.

Booted the boot floppy i made and unzipped the .zip file onto the blank drive.

I bit fiddly to do the first time but once you have made it once its easy to reinstall.

It comes with an .hdf file right, so where do you get the .zip file from... Is this doable without using WINUAE at all on real amiga hardware?

You HAVE to make the zip file from inside winuae. unless somebody can supply you with one already made.. The main downloads from the main site are .hdf files, which are bootable hard disk images.

instructions are here>
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/instructions.htm

method 2 is what im referring to.

So to make it you will require access to a pc with winuae, workbench 3.0/3.1 adf disk images. and some way of making the bootdisk from adf and a way to transfer the system.zip over, lite was just under 15mb.

I guess you could use UAE for Amiga OS  :-D

I use ClassicWB on my 1200D by the way, it works very nice. I had to customize it in several ways to fit my needs but it gave a good start and saved a lot of work.

I dont like Scalos, I cant work out if you can make the wb a backdrop, or if it has to be in a window all the time?

Otherwise my 2nd A1200 uses the light version. The reason why you have to do it this way is you need to own the workbench disc, as it takes files from there to boot for the 1st time.

That's all I've ever used on my A1200.  Although before I got an accelerator, I had to use the Lite version.  I've been using the deluxe higher versions now.  It's always worked great, and is a great pre-configured 'OS'.

Ok... But how do I get that zip file from the .hdf if I am not using WINUAE or another flavor, can someone upload it or give a a link so that I can download it and put it on my CF card to transfer it, actually a zip inside a lha would be best since EasyADF can umcompress LHA to a drive. Can anybody hook me up?

Thanks.

Okay...  The zip file isn't in the HDF.  The HDF is the uninitialized image of the system.  It only contains the harddrive contents.  The zip file is the ADF of the initializing disk.

So, so do you need the hard drive contents or the floppy contents?

When I trans'ed everything from my PC I used Amiga Explorer from Cloanto and a null modem cable, but you don't actually NEED Amiga Explorer.

The only way to avoid using winuae is for somebody else to do it for you using winuae.

then they would give you the system.zip already to go. you would then copy that to your amiga using the cf card. Then you unzip it using the bootdisk supplied in the classicwb archive.
