Mac OS X Leopard is great for amiga.org
« on: October 27, 2007, 11:06:32 AM »
Just got Mac OS X Leopard installed on my MacBook. I have to say I really dislike what they've done with the interface. However, the Web Clip feature of dashboard is really useful. Have a look at this screenshot of my Dashboard which shows recent forum posts, Coffee House posts, image uploads and private messages all on the Dashboard. It's live so every time I go to the Dashboard it updates. So I can keep up to date with a.org at a glance without ever having to open a browser :-)

Hum,
That looks really good - now all you need is a chatbot to read it and reply for you.

A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

You had to turn off the second disk drive in order to get some extra chip mem KBs free, if you wanted to run a mem hungry game/program.

Yet today the same applies to Windows ( -being stingy with the mem, if you don`t want to wait for ages swapping from the pagefile to physical mem eternally).

But in the Mac world, this doesn`t exist, and you don`t even care what`s underneath! It just works flawlessly and it`s very responsive to the end user! This is my experience from the MacOSX just before Leopard. I hope this to be still the same regarding the speed, as for the new features I`m sure it`s even better (just watched the guided tour );-)

It uses about 7GB for a basic install. My CPU is about 90% idle when the machine isn't (visibly) doing anything. With Safari, Mail and Activity Monitor running the system is showing just over a gig of RAM in use, but only about 585MB of that is active (not sure what the rest is doing - just allocated for the system I suppose?)

It is *very* responsive. Certain things actually feel faster than Tiger. The new Finder is lovely. I've overcome some of my gripes with the new interface, namely getting the horrible 3D dock to revert back to 2D. So now I am happy :-)

But you do have a browser open - the KHTML (or whatever they use nowadays) engine is permanently loaded and you can't turn it off.

It's no better than windows explorer in that regard :-P

It's probably running anyway, regardless of whether or not it's showing on the dashboard or as an application. The system is responsive, so who cares?
