p.OS, anyone?
« on: October 13, 2007, 10:02:53 PM »
I've got a copy of the p.OS Prerelease CD here, but apart from the knowledge that it is/was some replacement OS for Amiga (and eventually other hardware platforms), I don't know much about it...

Has anyone ever tried p.OS? Does it have any compatibility with AmigaOS, or is it a completely different thing?

I know it's been dead for almost a decade, but it  might be fun installing it and taking a trip down memory lane...

I spent ages trying to find a copy of this OS so that I could find out more about it...

Give it a go and provide a full report. Thanks.

It is as compatilbe as it could be. From the users point of view it is not much moren then a nice Workbench replacement with some tolls and demos to play around. Think of it like DirOpus Megelan: gives an enhenced desktop and can be either run as full WB replacement or be started from WB. It has problems with MagicMenu though. Oh and it does not seem to like 68060, at least I couldnt`t get it to run on one.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

yeah, I bought that CD too when it came out.  Funny they call that "released" CD a "pre-release".  Anyway, it's not bad and they have obviously put a lot of effort into it.  Sort of a pitty that effort was a total waste cause I don't remember it actually taking off in ANY way.

I've tried out p.os prerelease years ago.

For me it was a kind of WB-replacement and compatible with all applications i had.

it was named pre-release, because the final release should be released later on and be available fopr different ahrdware architectures.  once i googled p.os, because i liked the icos so much.   i found a company who has drwan the icons for p.os. But now i cant find that page anymore.

the p.os article on wikipedia was removed. it seems that prodad is running pos on their casablanca systems, etc. threfor a final version must exist ;o)

regards

If im not mistaken pOS source code reside in the AROS svn somewere! when he left he gave the code to the AROS team (but i dont think any of it has ever been used) + i do seem to remember pOS using AROS code as well.

Actually I think 4play has confused p.OS with PowerOS, we were offered the PowerOS sources but I don't think they were ever used.
