This RGB to VGA adapter from the same place WILL work but at £99 it is overly expensive.

Overly expensive? That's about the price an old Amiga external SD/FF seem to sell for on ebay. And You would get a warranty. Expensive, yes, but probably the only way to get a SD/FF immediately, at least if you can make the required Amiga-to-converter cable.

I've seen similar boxes for $55-60 or £30-35.

It's only 16-bit RGB and it has to convert Analog to Digital to Analog again which can affect quality.

Internal Amiga ones stay in the digital domain and can (some) do 24-bit which offers better picture quality for AGA gfx.

All true, but internal ones are rare as McEwen sightings on this side of the pond. I have an external one from Software Hut that was in the range of US $175, that is of course analog->digital->analog, and the image quality is not great, but even those are not available anymore due to an obsolete component (see an old thread).
