How easy would it be to port linux apps?
« on: November 23, 2002, 02:57:40 AM »
Knowing nothing about amigaDE, I figured I would ask the question ...

For those of you who are familiar with AmigaDe...

How easy would it be to port staroffice or a good browser over to amigaone?

Or does anyone even know?

And also...
Would there be a decrease in speed by porting it over?

The AmigaOne doesn't run AmigaDe.

don't know but IMHO it has already or will be done soon.

Look at it this way:
(1) Amiga need a good browser and staroffice  to prosper
(2) Amiga will prosper
=> AmigaOne can run a good browser and staroffice soon enough

or this way:
it has been done so much that Amiga couldn't have disregarded those two necessary apps.

Well, I think the only thing the A-1 runs
right now is Linux?

Not untill OS5,  and if OS4 doesn't get an Office App and a Web browser, the chances of an OS5 follow up are pretty slim.

A better question would be, is anyone porting a browser/Office package for OS "4".

Well then...

Is anyone porting  an office app and a web browser to OS4?

Because I kinda doubt that Ibrowse is a good solution.

I could be wrong since I haven't used it in ages, but the last time I did it was an unsatisfactory answer to my browsing desires.

Similar results with Aweb.

The Amiga needs a good browser and a good office app.

Won't OS 4 only have a 68k browser? If so,
that's not very encouraging, although I guess
it would be nice to have a semi-decent browser
for my current system.

Yes, they do at least need that. It would be
difficult for me to justify the cost without
at least the essentials.

I don't know.
I can't get any imformation on the current state of Ibrowse.
Thier website appears to be down.

I don't believe thier making it ppc code though.

So you're probably right.

Emulator better work good.

IBrowse 3.0 will be written for AOS 4.
IBrowse 2.3 is currently AOS 3 and 68k at present, once that is complete and features and bugs sorted then v 3 will be done.

Linux programs are difficult to port and they use X Windows for the GUI stuff and that has to be re-written for AmigaOS using Reaction or MUI or whatever GUI you choose. Not an easy task.

Not necessarily - Holger Kruse wrote AmiWin X11 which is x-windows for amiga.

I thought the problem was that amiga has no GTK toolkit (etc). Kronos? You know more about this sort of thing :-)
