Mp3s on Amiga hardware?
« on: July 04, 2003, 06:17:26 AM »
A few general questions.  How are people playing Mp3s on their Amigas?  Paula can do it in 14 bits if there is a fast accelerator, like 060.  Anyone using an 040 with Paula?  Is anyone using a dedicated Mp3 decoder?  Who makes it?  Does it work well?  Compatible?  Still available?  Hopefully, I wont start a war on personal ethics, but, does anyone still successfully connected their Amiga to any of the file sharing sites?

On a 060 it should be not much of a problem to play mp3's, but a ppc or a HW MP3 decoder such as a delfina soundcard would make a lot more sense since playing an mp3 will cost your 060 a lot of cpu power.
Personally i have 2 ppc Amiga's @home and use AmigaAmp or Prayer 2, works fine!

I've never got mp3's to play anything like they should do on my '040, but it is only 28Mhz. It does WAV's just fine though!  (but then so does an A500!) :-D

Theres a wee dongle that sits on the Parallel connector, and draws power off the serial using a pass through port (or is it the other way round ?) this enables top notch MP3 decoding on a stock A500.
no accelerator.

I think Eyetech do one, about £60.

worth adding to a 600, if you get a HDD as well, for a small solution !

I've got a 40Mhz '040 and I can play MP3 files at an acceptable quality on my SB128.....  As long as I've got no other tasks running!

I've found that Paula is faster than my SB128 at playing MP3 files (in 8-bit modes), but whether that is down to me being crap at setting up the drivers and hardware, or whether I need a jucier processor I don't know.

Opinions are most welcome!

I listen to MP3s on my A4000, plain 25 MHz C= 3640 CPU card.
Of course, it required some trickery to find the right setup.
I use MPEGA, the command-line player. Give it fifteen seconds of buffer, play in mono, with frequency division. It works fine, as long as you don't do anything nasty like browsing the web or opening a drawer with icons in it.
I think my 40 MHz Apollo 1240 copes much better, but I haven't had much time to play with my 1200. Plan to use it as a portable karaoke machine, though.

Is there a A1200 version??

The parallel port MP3 players work on all amigas from the A2000/500 up to the A4000, and even the 1000 with a converter on the parallel port. You don't even need to upgrade the computer from stock, except for a hard disk for storage of course.

I use a Delfina Plus with 128Kwords, it works great with DelfinaMPG from aminet but if you use the Player from OS3.9 you will have some lockup problems and must do a hardware reset of the system.  I have had this card for a few years and they have updated the software but it is very had to contact these people.

Strange, I've sent two E-mails to Individual Computers both got replies within a day. Maybe you are contacting someone else?
