How much?????
« on: September 06, 2007, 11:14:49 PM »
Ok this is not Amiga so its OT.

But I was looking for a cheap 486 motherboard to do some experimenting with.
And I came across this:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220064163126&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:uk

I have asked the seller is this a typing mistake, so far no reply.
He has to be kidding right? Or am I missing some thing here?

Mike. :-?  :-?  :-?

Well, one thing's for certain: he's selling a serious amount of junk through his ebay store ("over 5,000 386 CPU's", etc.), but you know what they say, "one man's junk is another man's treasure".

Welcome to ebay.

Old PC hardware, unlike Amiga hardware, can be absurdly easy/cheap to get... many areas have small shops selling this stuff for practically nothing. Look for a "used computer" store near you. Some only have like Pentium and newer, but you sometimes find 486 and 386 systems and parts for a few dollars.

Calling your local recycler and junk yard also will get you lots of stuff, many times free. Same goes for asking friends.

That board is worth absolutely nothing. You would have to pay most people to take it.

What a bargain!

Our local recycling centre had at least three complete 486-based systems (as well as loads of Pentium/P2/P3 boxes in various states) - and these would typically go for NZ$5 or thereabouts!

eBay isn't the best place to look for old PC-based stuff - ask around locally... Someone probably has an old machine in their garage that they'd happily give you!

Over here, in this area we have several surplus type computer stores that sell NEW (old stock) 486 motherboards for as little as $1.00 each - a really good one may sell for $3 - $5 each. used 486 computers, working, for $10.00 (maybe less).

Agree with all that's been said, older PC hardware is really cheap, or free, in my area... My last 2 PC's were given to me, or found, one a Xandros box (Linux, based on Debian distro) the other a Win 98 box that I found in the street, only needed a CD-ROM drive, I had one in storage.
The price this guy wants is crazy....

Perhaps not, there are some more exotic hardware out there that requires ISA slots and the OS/app maybe not able to run on a pentium class CPU.

If you want to be really shocked, take a look at current pricing for a new pin printer.

@BinoX

Yes that would be nice of you.

Let me know when you are ready please

 :-)

Mike.

BTW,
I took a look at his other gear, he wanted £250.00 for a set of DOS discs DOS6.1 was it?
He has to be a joke.

He is so expensive its just not real.
I do wander how many people buy his gear from him, they must all be millionaires.

Have you seen the people selling boxes of CPUs by the pound on eBay?  I know a metal recycling guy that recovers the rare metals from old CPUs, motherboards, etc.  With gold hovering around $700 an ounce you can make a pretty penny off of much of the older "junk" as they usually contained more gold than the newer equipment.

Hi,

I spent a couple of years of my fairly early childhood disassembling a mainframe that my dad bought for scrap. Precisely for that reason.

Quite an amazing experience I can tell you, and a hell of a way to get 'hands on' experience with computers  :-D

Its the way ebay is going....

Market Traders with 10,000's or 100,000's items of stock, who "auto" buy and sell using stock/portfolio/market management software. All you need is a big warehouse and a few million start up capital and you trade items + - of their market value.

Some of the software has heuristic margin analysis, i.e it analyses trends in previous sales to trigger buying and selling of different stock, so I guess it can get the prices wrong....or are they wrong....is it the market value for it needs to 99 since it was bought automatically at 98.

One of the problems with "MIDAS" type software for Ebay but a 99 pounds is small loss for the Millions traded.

:)

Shaz

Then again....it might just be a DOH Seller. :)

was Enterprise Vault (Its an Exchange Fail!), now its EMC Avamar, Dedupe for mostly everything including brain cells.
