A500 Plus not booting
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:57:41 PM »
Since yesterday, my A500 plus appears to have half died. I say half died because it powers up, and I can even restart it with the usual key combination - this causes the HD to spin up again. Apparently I can turn the caps lock on and off as well.

Unfortunately I have no video output (no kickstart screen) and it doesn't even try to boot from anything. I don't even get a floppy drive click.

Any thoughts? Do I need to get another A500 unit or is this a solvable problem?

The A500 Plus came with an onboard battery which could of leaked and done some damage to your motherboard.

Well it seems the battery has indeed leaked a bit, and there's a manky area on the motherboard. I'm not sure if cleaning will be enough, or it's a good idea to take the battery out. Seems to be stuck there.

Depends how bad the damage is, it may not be worth repairing and it may be cheaper just to get another board or machine from ebay and use the current one for spare parts.

I had a feeling that may be the case - it's not exactly hard to get hold of cheap A500 units. I guess this is a hazard of using rather old computer hardware. The disk drive has been on the fritz for some time so I may as well pull it apart for spares, or get another unit for spares.

I suppose the ROM could have been fried for some reason, as it seems that low-level hardware is working fine.

Hi,
Got a similar problems years ago, I solved it by taking off and brushing every socketed circuits and its own socket with a electronic contact cleaner !
