Hi, friends,as CF card capacity is bigger and bigger,now 16GB CF is normal,but the price of CF card becomes more cheaper day after day.Why don't we put one CF to IDE adapter in the computer,then we can install operation systerm in CF card as harddisk,it is very fast ,small power,little voice.I suggest you can use the following CF to IDE adapter.

Or just buy a solid state hard disk - they're coming down massively in price now too (and they're basically exactly the same - CF cards with a IDE interface).

Good idea, but we're way ahead of you mate.

Using simple IDE - CF adapters is becoming very popular now for remaining Amiga users, especially in models such as the A1200 and A600 because of size and power consumption limitations.

Here is a neat image by a member here showing it being done.

People have been fitting CF cards into classic computers for many years. CF is a PATA IDE device just like a hard drive.

While CF will never be as cheap as a hard drive (it wont) it is becoming more convenient for classic computers.

The only problem I'd be concerned about is the life of the CF card.  Flash memory can only perform so many "rewrite" cycles in its lifetime before it begins to fail, considerably much less than a regular laptop hard drive.  I don't see this as being a huge issue with Amiga systems as they don't allocate virtual memory and temp files to hard drives like the Windows operating systems do, but it's still something to keep in mind if you are doing extensive rewrite operations to the card.

Yeah the limited read/write lifespan of CF cards is what has prevented me from using this in my Amiga so far. Frequent backups to more permanent media seem wise for anyone who has done this mod.

Never had a problem so far and I've been running my home CVS server on a small minibox computer from CF card for years now and I access CVS pretty much every day.

I love it. It's small, silent, uses very little power and keeps going and going pretty much forever it seems.

Asus have a subnotebook coming out - I'm buying my daughter one for Christmas - that uses CF rather than HD internally.  Can't wait.

being a big fan of USB drives I like this idea (and have thought of it long ago), but how would I use that in my Amiga 2000 (which probably has a dead HD at this point)?

What would the interface be for a 2000 - which tends to be the model left out of things like USB, etc.

If you can get an IDE card for it, you can use the same IDE-CF adapters that others are using. I dont know if there's a SCSI-CF adapter, I kind of doubt it. IDE cards do exist for A2000s though.

I have heard that CF is not a very good option for windows users, due to the fact that they have a pretty low write cycle count before they degrade.

Though with a OS like AmigaOS, this should not be a problem at all.
