How many use Amiga for E-mail?
« on: August 29, 2007, 07:43:46 PM »
What software do you use?  How do you cope with newer non-Amiga (PDFs, Word, Excel, etc) file formats?  What account providers, like MyYahoo, work for you?

I use YAM, even gave it it's own partitin.  Seems to work well, especially with text and images.

My Yahoo account maintains a mode for older machines and works well with iBrowse.

YAM

Move them to SPAM (*duh*)
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Unfortunately, in my business, church, and social circles, I am the only Amiga user.  People are always sending PDFs, x.xls, and word docs.  Apdf does a decent job and I can usually find a way to view Word files.  I normally have to move Excel files to another platform to view them. Eeerrr!  Did any of the Amiga spreadsheet apps read or translate Excel files?

Is church really such a big part of your life that you need to differentiate it from "social circles"?

I use my miggy everyday for emails, it's generally a safer option than possible virus emails ;)

Apdf is good for the majority of pdfs, but some do need to be transferred, as do excel files. Pagestream opens the text from Word docs, but to see the graphics, you need to transfer to a PC.

I prefer not to use yahoo or hotmail, as I think a browser is for web pages, not emails., but IBrowse does allow me to read the odd hotmail email if I need to.

Believe it or not some people are heavily involved in their churches. I guess that's difficult to believe/understand in an age when Christianity and religion as a whole is scorned. It's actually quite sad that we've come to this state.

Have tried a few.
Microdot, Thor, YAM and Simplemail.
Mostly use YAM but some times use Simplemail.

SpamFryer works well with YAM but I can send emails from different accounts with Simplemail.

@ Wurzel

I love not worrying about opening some sinister attachment. There is a new clever strategy in e-mail subject lines: "I'm sorry we had a fight. See my e-card"  Then the mail is merely a link to click upon.  I'm not sure how the trap works, but I'm not going for it. Grin.

I guess no Amiga Apps open Excel files then?

I find Yahoo's e-mail less convenient to use than my own Yam. I simply appreciate that MyYahoo is every bit as usable on my ancient machine as it is on my wife's new one.  Many web sites and services take the attitude that "..only the latest standards on this site and users must upgrade or go without..".  Services that accomodate my preferences are somewhat deserving of my patronage, my humble philosophy.  Besides, I find them useful when traveling.

@ swift240 and others

I might try out Simplemail though I have no complaints with YAM after many years.

I hardly use my Amiga for e-mail. I have my own IMAP-server at home and IMAP-support on the Amiga is not up to scratch, making it hard to use my Amiga for mail. The moment this improves (whether it be through Simplemail or through YAM), I'll start using it on a more regular basis for reading & writing mail.
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

I'm using POP3 with YAM on my A3k at home for all private mail. PDF and Microsoft files are transfered to my PC for viewing.

Is IMAP *still* not supported by YAM?! Good grief, that was one of my main gripes with it when I still used it until a few years ago :\.
