Amiga to a 15KHz capable LCD TV?
« on: August 25, 2007, 05:13:05 PM »
There's a new line of Sony LCD TV's available (the XBR4) and someone was able to post the EDID info. Take a look:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the XBR4 info I took using DVI to HDMI.
Monitor
Windows description......... Generic PnP Monitor
Manufacturer description.... SONY TV XV
Manufacturer................ Sony
————————————————————————————
Plug and Play ID............ SNY8300
Serial number............... n/a
EDID data source............ Registry (stored)
————————————————————————————
Manufacture date............ 2007, ISO week 32
EDID revision............... 1.3
Display type and signal..... Digital
Sync input support.......... n/a
Screen size................. 1600 x 900 mm (~76")
Power management............ n/a
Color characteristics
Display gamma............... 2.20
Red chromaticity............ Rx 0.625 - Ry 0.340
Green chromaticity.......... Gx 0.280 - Gy 0.595
Blue chromaticity........... Bx 0.155 - By 0.070
White point (default)....... Wx 0.283 - Wy 0.298
Timing characteristics
VESA GTF support............ Not supported
Horizontal scan range....... 15-70kHz
Vertical scan range......... 58-62Hz
Video bandwidth............. 150MHz
Extension blocks............ 1
Timing recommendation #1.... 1920x1080 at 60Hz
Modeline................ "1920x1080" 148.500 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
Timing recommendation #2.... 1280x720 at 60Hz
Modeline................ "1280x720" 74.250 1280 1390 1430 1650 720 725 730 750 +hsync +vsync
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Notice anything unusual? Yeah, it says it can sync down to 15KHz on the horizontal. The set offers a standard VGA PC Input so it could be as easy as connecting a Commodore RGB - VGA adapter to run native!

I know people have been connecting their Amigas to LCDs for a long time now. Scaling is one thing, but to be able to see a large LCD TV display native Amiga video output would be neat. Since I have already been looking for a new LCD TV, having this ability would be a great added bonus.

Yeah, I didn't say it would be cheap. :)  Also, the capability of sets like these to be able to sync down (at least according to the EDID) to 15kHz may not be anything new. This is just the first time I actually considered doing it since the numbers are represented.

I checked the EDID on my one year old Sharp LCD TV and it only goes down to 24kHz.

They support 15kHz horizontally, but lack 50 Hz vertically - thus no PAL... :-(

Sony will no doubt make a European equivalent that will support PAL, if they haven't already done so.

I doubt it will support PAL via VGA-connector. The signals are going through different circuitry than SCART or S-VIDEO that are deinterlaced and enhanced internally before display. I got myself a cheap LG 19" TV for Amiga use as it has SCART for native video and VGA for BVision (if I ever get it work). The picture via SCART is less than perfect as most of TV units are geared towards video use and thus the enhancer shows some nasty artifacts when typing or moving mouse. But it is much better than interlaced display on my CM8833.

The good thing about TVs for Amiga use is that they might be able to sync to scandoublers/flicker fixers. My "real" computer monitor (LG Flatron) cannot sync to image provided by Amber on A3000, but I had no trouble with the TV. This has to do with being able to sync to lower vertical frequency, I think.
